In the decade of 1980s, the police department commenced the use of computers with the computerization of police officers personal Information using two computers in the Personnel Division in1990; a permanent computer section was established in the Fifth Floor of the Police Headquarters. In this section, a Mini Computer, model of “Wang” with six terminals came into operation. In 1992, when SSP Mr. Achillis Joseph was the Director of the computer section he formed a separate place for the computer section. In accordance with that, the Police Headquarters formed a Sixth Floor. Only for the computer section.

SSP Mr. Gamini Nawarathne then was appointed as the Director of the computer section in 1996 & it was named as the Police Information Technology Division. At that time, we could see a rapid development in the computer division along with many projects such as Personnel System,  Police Medical Services System, Police Transport Inventory Control System & Fuel Management System, Police Saving Association System and Police Narcotics System because of his firm determination & proper administration. 

The objective of the Police Information Technology Division is to provide Information Technology facilities to the Police Departmental functions as a support service.  DIG IT heads this setup and a Director responsible for the administration and maintenance of the computer projects has been functioned.  There are 12 Inspectors under the command of Director/IT in the Division where they are responsible for the functions such as software development, police web, graphics, technical pool, electronics repair unit, training and administration.  The total cadre is around 70 men working round the clock.

Information Technology Division is responsible for carrying out feasibility studies in view of computerization of functional divisions as well as territorial divisions of Police. Having computerized individual divisions a wide area Network would be established later to communicate from stations with Police Headquarters and vice versa. The Information Technology Division is too carrying out purchasing of hardware for the said projects and developing in house software applications.
