Mounted Police - Development in the Division

Mounted Division has expanded and new stables have already been started in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, and Police Training School at Kalutara with the hope of opening in all the main towns in Sri Lanka.

The Division has recruited a permanent veterinary surgeon in the rank of reserve Assistant Superintendent of Police to do full time veterinary work.

A new veterinary laboratory for horses will be opened at the Police Mounted Division. Horse breeding is another new subject being studied by the Police veterinary surgeon of the Mounted Division. This will be started on a trail basis at the Mounted section at Nuwara - Eliya.

A Proposal is being studied to start a full fledged riding school affiliated to the British riding school. It is proposed that the income generated by the riding school to be used for the expansion of Mounted Division.

VETERINARY TREATMENTS

All treatments to horses are attended by the Police vet. Surgeon and advance treatments are attended to by the professor attached to the vet. hospital at Peradeniya.

RECRUITMENT     

Opportunities exist for those who have the necessary qualifications to enlist as a mounted trainee in the mounted division. Selection for mounted division is done from the police and they are given 06 months training course on.

Officers are expected to obtain the certificate of excellence before being appointed as mounted police officers.  

On being qualified, names are gazetted in the police gazette part 11 notification and thereafter they are entitled to wear the I.G ‘s mounted course badge. After obtaining the I.G.’s mounted badge it is compulsory for a mountee to serve five years at the police mounted division.

Mounties has  the opportunity of being trained abroad.

The certificate of qualified mountee granted by the Mounted Division has international recognition.  Special allowances are paid to qualified mountees. Police officer has gained foreign employment as equestrian.

DUTIES

The mountees are expected to perform a minimum of four hours mounted duties in the saddle.

SPECIAL DUTIES

The horses are transported out of Colombo division for special duties only with the express permission of Inspector General of Police / Deputy Inspector General of Police Colombo.

The transporting of routine rotation of horses to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Kalutara are permitted by D.I.G. Colombo Range including transporting of forage, , medicine items etc.

SPECIAL VEHICLES TO TRANSPORT HORSES

There are two specially built vehicles to transport horses to any destination. A long air-conditioned vehicle to carry 10 horses and a short vehicle to carry 06 horses at a time and a horse float to carry two horses.

The Police drivers who drive the special horse carriages are given two weeks specialized training.

PRIVATE FUNCTIONS AND RIDING BY NON-POLICE OFFICERS AND NON-QUALIFIED OFFICER

Under no circumstance the police horses will be used for private functions or ridden by a non Police officer unless authorized by Inspector – General of Police.

Only I.G.’s Mounted course qualified police personals shall ride police horses. Reserve Police officers of any rank are not entitled for I.G.P’s Mounted Course.

The charges for hiring of horses and transport for private functions will be decided by S.S.P. Mounded Division in accordance with I.G.P’s circular.
