Newly appointed Inspector General of Police Mr. N.K. Illangakoon assumed duties today 04th July 2011 where a ceremony was held at the Police Headquarters in light of welcoming the IGP. Mr. Illangakoon stands 33rd place in the chronology of Inspector General’s appointed throughout the years. The IGP was warmly welcomed by the SDIG Mr. Gamini Navarathna together with Director Headquarters Administration SSP Mr. Bernard Silva and subsequently the National, Police and Headquarters flags were hoisted by them. A  Guard of honor comprised of Police and STF Personnel, was accorded to the IGP.  He made a short and clear speech where at the inception he expressed his sincere gratitude to His Excellency the President and the cabinet for electing him. Addressing the gathering Mr. Illangakoon pointed out that his predominant objective is to enhance the relationship between the Police Department and the public which has slightly diminished owing to some unfortunate and unfavorable incidents occurred recently.”It’s our duty to render our service focusing the aspirations of public without any delay where a delay could generate an adverse image about the Police”. Also He added that “we are been paid by the public so in return it’s our utmost duty to dedicate ourselves for the sake of the public”. Thus IGP mentioned that in this quest the factors such as well discipline, obedience, and courtesy should be strictly adhered.

IGP also expressed that he will be there to look for any issues pertain to Police officers including welfare and etc. Furthermore he explicitly added that The Police Headquarters possesses the main mechanism of controlling the entire Police Department so officers attached must work efficiently without providing any room for a collapse. Eventually refreshments were provided to the participants.

Meanwhile parallel to the event, Activities were commenced at the IG”s conference hall by lighting the traditional oil lamp and multi religious observances were conducted to invoke blessing’s on the IGP. Later a media conference was taken place between the IGP and media personnel.
