IGP Special Operations Unit Established to Provide Information on the Emergency Disaster Situation.

Due to the unexpected severe weather conditions impacting the island, numerous areas have experienced heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds, and landslides. Evacuation notices have been issued to residents in several affected regions.  To ensure effective coordination during this emergency and to deliver essential assistance, an IGP Special Operations Unit has been set up at Police Headquarters under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police (IGP). Sri Lanka IGP attends 93rd General Assembly of Interpol

The delegation including the Inspector General of Police participated in a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 93rd Session of the INTERPOL General Assembly, held in Marrakech, Morocco, from 24 to 27 November 2025. These engagements focused on strengthening operational cooperation, enhancing information-sharing mechanisms, and further advancing collaborative efforts to combat transnational crime. Throughout the sessions, the IGP and the accompanying senior officers met with representatives from Thailand, Belarus, Oman, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, Maldives, Australia, Russia, and Japan. The discussions were constructive, with all parties expressing their commitment to deepening mutual support within the INTERPOL framework. The Sri Lankan delegation comprised Inspector General of Police Mr.Priyantha Weerasoriya , Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and Head of NCB-Colombo Mr. K.V.D.A.J. Karawita and Chief Inspector of Police and Security Officer of NCB-Colombo Mr. L.R. Police Clinch Overall Championship at 2025 Public Service Athletics Championship

The Sri Lanka Police emerged victorious at the 39th Public Service Athletics Championship, securing the overall championship with an impressive 678 points. The championship was held on 20th and 21st November at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama. Competing against 1,200 athletes from 80 state institutions, the Police Sports Team delivered an outstanding performance, achieving numerous first-place wins and comfortably collecting the points required to claim the overall title. Among the notable achievements, Police Constable 7809 B.G. Sachithra Harshani Jayakantha of the Criminal Investigation Department was awarded the Best Female Athlete of the tournament. She recently won five gold medals at the 23rd Asian Veterans Athletics Games, reaffirming her position as one of the most exceptional female athletes in the Sri Lanka Police. Police Constable 90433 T.G.S. Wijethunga of the Police Sports Division received the Best Athlete award, while Police Constable 107601 D.M.P. Prabodh of the Police College was recognized as the Best New Athlete. The Best New Female Athlete award was presented to Female Police Constable 13288 Dissanayake** of the Idula Police Station. In the age group categories, Female Sub-Inspector Dilrukshi of the Monaragala Police Station was named the Best Athlete (50–54 years). Constable 6216 Udaya Kumara of the Police Special Task Force secured the Best Athlete (35–39 years) title, while Female Police Constable 8646 of the Galle Police Station received the same recognition in the women’s category. Police Sergeant 39931 G.M.C. Sarath Kumara of the Police Special Task Force was awarded the Best Athlete (45–49 years)**. In addition to these top honours, the Sri Lanka Police secured runners-up positions in the 55–59, 45–49, 40–44, and 35–39 age categories, while also becoming **champions in the 50–54, novice, and open athletics categories. The success of the Police team is credited to the strong leadership and encouragement of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, along with the dedicated efforts of DIG Mahinda Dissanayake, Chairman of Police Athletics, and *SSP Sugath Galagamage*, Secretary of Police Athletics.

Rewards and commendations for special raids and successful Investigations carried out in the Southern Province

Launching the second phase of the national operation “Quit – The Nation United”, initiated on the instructions of Hon. President Anura Kumara with the intention of eradicating toxic drug use and trafficking from the country, a public gathering was held on the evening of 20.11.2025 at the Tangalle Public Stadium with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. A key segment of the event, held under the patronage of the Hon. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, was awarding of cash rewards and commendations to police officers and Police Special Task Force officers, who uncovered large quantities of drugs, seized illegal weapons and ammunition, solved serious crimes, and performed their duties with exceptional dedication, out of the officers who have successfully conducted raids in the Southern Province. Subsequently, for the recent successful arrests made along the Southern coastal belt involving large quantities of drugs, weapons, and ammunition, Hon. President also awarded rewards and commendations to Navy officers, and officers of the Civil Security Department and private informants who were present at the gathering, were also appreciated. * Some of the successful operations for which the relevant police officers received rewards include: * Arresting 53 kilograms and 300 grams of heroin, 60 kilograms and 660 grams of narcotic Ice, along with a lorryand  two suspects on 13.04.2025 near Kudawella Fisheries Harbour. * Arresting the suspects and a T-56 firearm related to Kosgoda Double Homicide on 04.04.2018. * Seizure of a T-56 firearm and 30 ammunition on 06.08.2020 at Hanbunna area of Weeraketiya. * A Case on a missing female person in Hiniduma Police Area on 05th June 2020 was revealed to be a homicide, and arresting the suspect. * Arresting four suspects along with an AK-47 automatic firearm, a pistol, and 12080 grams of heroin on 30.06.2023 at Matara and Deyyandara areas.  The event was attended by the Maha Sangha led by Most Venerable Sapugahayaya Saranankara Thera, Chief Sangha Nayaka in the Hambantota District of the Sri Rohana chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya, and leaders of all religions, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne, Commanders of the Tri-Forces, Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya (Attorney-at-Law), senior government officials, security force members, and a large gathering of residents.

Senior DIG Sanjeewa Dharmaratne has assumed duties as the Senior DIG in charge of the Adminstration.

According to transfer orders issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and subject to the approval of the National Police Commission, Senior DIG Dharmaratne took over duties as the Administrative Officer of the Sri Lanka Police at Police Headquarters on 18 November 2025. The Senior DIG (Administration) is the officer automatically appointed to perform the duties of Acting IGP when the IGP is on leave or overseas. The position holds responsibility second only to the IGP and oversees all administrative affairs of the Sri Lanka Police. Senior DIG Dharmaratne joined the Sri Lanka Police in 1999 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police after completing his training at the Kalutara Police Training College. He holds a degree in BSc in Physics from the University of Colombo and is widely regarded as a disciplined and distinguished officer with extensive experience serving across the island as both a Divisional Officer and Senior DIG.

Massive Ice Drug Bust at Kirinda Beach: 07 Suspects Arrested with 329kg Stock Worth Rs. 394 Million

Under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police, a team of officers from the Western Province North Crime Division, acting on the direction of the Senior Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Southern Province, conducted a raid on Kirinda Beach in the Kirinda Police Division on November 12, 2025. The raid, carried out following a tip-off, led to the arrest of seven suspects and the seizure of 329 kilograms of “ice” (crystal methamphetamine) found aboard a boat. Subsequent investigations resulted in the seizure of six vehicles believed to have been used in the drug trafficking operation. The vehicles have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigation. Police estimate the street value of the seized drugs to be approximately Rs. 394 million. The suspects, who are residents of the Colombo area and the Southern Province, are to be produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court to obtain detention orders. The Police Narcotics Bureau continues to conduct further investigations into the case.

Closing Ceremony of 2025 Inter-Divisional Volleyball Tournament Held Under Patronage of IGP

The closing ceremony of the 2025 Inter-Divisional Volleyball Tournament, which was held over three days commencing on 05 November 2025 at the Police Field Force Headquarters Grounds, was ceremonially concluded on the evening of 07 November 2025 under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya. Spectators were treated to the men’s final between the Police Special Task Force and the Police Field Force Headquarters teams, and the women’s final between the Police Field Force Headquarters and Anuradhapura Police Division teams. In the men’s category, the Special Task Force emerged champions with a close 3–2 victory over the Police Field Force Headquarters. In the women’s final, the Police Field Force Headquarters team secured a decisive 3–0 win against the Anuradhapura Police Division. The ceremony concluded successfully, and the President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and President of the Police Volleyball Association, Senior DIG (Training & Advanced Training) Mr. Sajeewa Medawatte, awarded trophies and certificates to the champions and congratulated the winning teams. Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Mr. Angelo Mathews and Sri Lanka’s No. 1 golfer Mr. Jason Liyanage were present as special guests. The Nuwara Division was awarded the trophy for the Best Out-of-Province Men’s Team, while the Matara Division received the trophy for the Best Out-of-Province Women’s Team. The Best Player (Men’s) was awarded to 79686 Mr. Terence of the Police Field Force Headquarters, and the Best Player (Women’s) was won by Sergeant 6105 Mr. P.A.V. Chamarika, also of the Police Field Force Headquarters. Medals and certificates were also presented to the best attacker, best blocker, best server and best fielder in both the men’s and women’s categories. Senior DIG Mr. Sajeewa Medawatte (President, Sri Lanka Volleyball Association), DIG Mr. D.G. Samantha de Silva (Commanding Officer – Police Special Task Force), Senior DIG Mr. Dinesh Karunanayake (Commanding Officer – Police Field Force Headquarters), SSP Mr. Prashantha de Silva (Director – Police Sports Division), SSP Mr. Y.D.S. Pinnaduwa (Secretary – Police Volleyball Association), Chief Inspector Mr. Wijemanne and other senior officers attended the ceremony.

Police Inter-Division Volleyball Tournament 2025 – with 104 Teams

The 2025 Sri Lanka Police Inter-Division Volleyball Tournament officially commenced at 6:30 a.m. on November 5, 2025, at the Police Field Force Headquarters Grounds in Colombo. The inaugural ceremony was held under the patronage of Senior DIG Sajeewa Medawatte, President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Association, with 37 women’s police teams and 67 men’s police teams representing each police division present with a strong determination to win the volleyball trophy. These teams are the most talented teams selected from the competitions held at the divisional level, so they will have the opportunity to experience a series of extremely exciting competitions. The winning team and the best players are scheduled to be awarded trophies and prizes at the closing ceremony to be held on the evening of 07.11.2025 under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police. The tournament was inaugurated by Senior DIG Sajeewa Medawatte, who congratulated the team members for successfully completing the tournament by developing camaraderie. The player’s pledge was given by the captain of the police volleyball team, Supun Ushantha, and the referee’s pledge was given by Chief Referee Wimalaratne Rajakaruna. Senior officers including the Commanding Officer of the Police Special Task Force, Deputy Inspector General of Police D.G. Samantha de Silva, the Commanding Officer of the Police Field Force Headquarters, Senior Superintendent of Police Prashantha de Silva, the Director of the Police Sports Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Y.D.S. Pinnaduwa, and the Secretary of the Police Volleyball Association, Chief Inspector Wijemanne, participated in this event.

Police Special Task Force wins the IGP Challenge Cup Taekwondo Championship

The closing ceremony of the IGP Challenge Cup Taekwondo Championship was held under the patronage of Her Excellency Miyon Lee, Ambassador of Korea, with the participation of the Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya(Attorney-at-Law), on 04.11.2025, at the Auditorium of the Foundation Institute, Colombo. Originating from the Republic of Korea, Taekwondo is a globally recognized martial art that has been introduced to Sri Lankan police officers during their training period for many years. Such tournaments provide opportunities for officers to further enhance their skills and compete at the provincial level. Notably, Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya is also a 6th Dan Black Belt holder in Taekwondo, having been awarded an honorary degree from Korea. The preliminary rounds of this year’s tournament were held earlier at the Katukurunda Special Task Force Training School, while the final match of the under-58 kg weight category took place during this ceremony. In this intense encounter between Police Constable 105855 N. P. N. Fernando and Police Constable 101324 R. M. K. N. Rathnayake of the Special Task Force, Constable Rathnayake secured his victory. Afterwards, the awards and trophies were presented, and the trophy for the Best Male Athlete of the novice category, was awarded to Police Constable 60105 W. M. M. Wijesinghe of the Kalutara Police College, who represented the Western Province, and competed in the 74–80 kg weight category. The award was presented by Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of Human Resource Management and International Relations Range, M. N. Sisira Kumara, who also serves as the President of the Sri Lanka Police Taekwondo Association. The trophy for the Best Female Athlete in the novice category, was awarded to Woman Police Constable 10398 N. D. S. P. Weerawardhana of the Warakapola Police Station, who represented the Sabaragamuwa Province and competed in the 49–53 kg weight category. The award was presented by Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Colombo Range, Nishantha de Soyza. The trophy and awards for Best Senior Officer were presented to Police Constable 101324 R. M. K. N. Rathnayake, while the Best Referee certificate and reward were presented to International Referee H. S. D. S. Dilruk. The Inspector General of Police and the Ambassador of Korea together presented the Overall Championship Trophy of the Novice Category to the Western Province, and the Overall Championship Trophy of the Tournament, i.e. the IGP’s Taekwondo Challenge Trophy, to the Special Task Force Taekwondo Pool, who emerged as overall champions of the tournament. The event was also attended by Deputy Inspector General of Police Nalaka de Silva, Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Special Task Force and Secretary of the Sri Lanka Police Taekwondo Association, Mrs. Nirosha Kumari, along with senior and junior officers of the Sri Lanka Police and the Special Task Force. The ceremony featured a Taekwondo artistic display by the Ratnapura Diamond Kick Taekwondo Academy, renowned for their skillful training, and a colourful cultural performance by the Police Cultural Division that added vibrancy to the event.
