23 kilograms of amber which is prohibited to be kept in possession, have been seized

A 32-year-old individual was arrested on 26-01-2025 at Ganegoda of  Rathgama Police Area by a group of officers of Police Special Task Force, Rathgama Camp, for keeping possession of 23 kg of amber alias whale waste illegally. He was handed over to the Police Station, Rathgama for further investigation.

The suspect is a resident of the area, and it has been revealed that the estimated value of the seized amber is approximately Fifty Million Rupees.

Due to the life threats caused to the whales living in the deep sea in order to obtain amber, which is mainly used in the perfume industry, possessing and selling amber is liable to arrest and be charged under Section 24(1) of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.
