Regarding a fake article circulating on social media

A letter prepared in English under the title “CONVICTION”, bearing the name of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, and a forged signature, is currently circulating on social media.

It is observed that the facts stated in this article have been presented using incoherent words without any legal basis and have been prepared inserting images, in the background, that resemble the State Emblem of Sri Lanka, the seal of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, and the crest of the Sri Lanka Police.

“Cyber Crime Headquarters Colombo, Sri Lanka” has been mentioned as the institution through which this article has been forwarded, and an establishment by this name does not exist in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Police informs the public that the official positions or facts stated in this article have not been published by the Sri Lanka Police and that it presents false and distorted facts.

It is also observed that this article has been deliberately and consciously prepared with the intention of discrediting the Sri Lanka Police and misleading the public.

Accordingly, the Criminal Investigation Department has initiated investigations to take necessary legal action against those who were involved in spreading false information.
