Functions of the Division are to provide Ceremonial Mounted Escort to heads of states and foreign dignitaries visiting the country, ceremonial opening of parliament, police functions crowd control during Kandy Esala perahera, May day, national day celebrations, national sports events, demonstrations, and to disperse unruly crowds, beach and routine city patrols. A new veterinary laboratory for horses will be opened at the Police Mounted Division. Horse breeding is another new subject being studied by the Police veterinary surgeon of the Mounted Division. This will be started on a trail basis at the Mounted section at Nuwara - Eliya.
A Proposal is being studied to start a full fledged riding school affiliated to the British riding school. It is proposed that the income generated by the riding school to be used for the expansion of Mounted Division.
