The Annual New Year Festival was held splendidly at the Police Field Force Headquarters

The main Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival of Sri Lanka Police is celebrated magnificently in the month of Bak (April) of every year under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police. New Year celebration for this year was held since the morning of 19-04-2025 at the ground of Police Field Force Headquarters. Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya conveys his wishes to all Police officers and the public for the Sinhala Hindu New Year. Prizes have been distributed among officers who won in the games, including the foremost event of the festival, marathon. The Deputy Inspector General of Police – Field Force Headquarters, Mr. Jagath Chandrakumara, the Commandant of the Police Field Force Headquarters, Woman Senior Superintendent of Police, Mrs. Darshika Kumari, and a number of senior police officers and junior officers have participated in the event. Police divisions such as Police Field Force Headquarters, Police Sports Division, Police Cultural Division, Police Media Division, Public Order Management Division and Criminal Record Division have extended their support and contribution to make the Annual New Year Festival successful.

Rewards to officers who performed their duties with distinction in the Colombo

The ceremony, which honored police officers who demonstrated exceptional skills in solving crimes while on duty in the Colombo and made commendable contributions to police duties, was presided over by the Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmaratne with the participation of the DIG in charge of the Colombo District, Mr. Ujith Liyanage. The event was held on the morning of 11th April 2025 at the auditorium of the Colombo DIG’s office. An amount of Rs. 19,500,000/= has been allocated from the IGP’s Reward Fund for officers attached to 27 police stations in the Colombo North, Colombo Central and Colombo South divisions, and 74 officers were symbolically presented with prize money on 11.04.2025.  Inspector grade officers, Police Sergeants, Women Police Sergeants, Police Constables, Women Police Constables, Police Sergeant Drivers and Police Constable Drivers were eligible for this reward. Colombo Central Division Senior Superintendent of Police Sugath Galagamage, Colombo North Division Senior Superintendent of Police Buddhika Samarapala, Colombo South Division Senior Superintendent of Police Lucian Suriya Bandara and many other police officers participated in this event.

Police Constable 103984 Herath saved a life

It has been reported that a Police Constable attached to the Katugastota Police Station risked his life to save a life. When Police Constable 103984 Herath, was engaged in traffic duty close to the Katugastota Bridge on 10-04-2025, he was informed that a young woman had fallen into the Mahaweli River from the Katugastota Bridge. Without a second though, he jumped into the river in his uniform and rescued the woman. Initially, she was then given the first aid and then she was admitted to Katugastota Hospital for treatment with the support of the residents. Police Constable 103984 Herath is praised and appreciated not only by the residents of the area, but also police officers.  He is at the age of 24 years and a permanent resident of Dehiattakandiya. He has completed basic Police training at the Mahiyanganaya Police College.  All police officers are commended for their bravery, who shine as they perform a humanitarian mission beyond their duties!

A stock of Kerala cannabis worth over 110 million seized in Dungalpitiya

A team of officers from the Dungalpitiya Police Station, in conjunction with Navy officers, arrested two suspects with nearly 190 kilograms of Kerala cannabis in the Lellama area of Negombo in a raid carried out on the morning of 09.04.2025. The suspects, aged 35 and 42, are residents of Pesale and Mannar, and the amount of Kerala cannabis seized from their possession is worth over Rs. 110 million.  Police officers and navy officers have discovered a stock of cannabis during an inspection of a lorry, and a car linked to the cannabis racket has also been taken into police custody after it was abandoned in the Keselwatte Police Division. Dungalpitiya Police are conducting further investigations.

173 grams of narcotic- ice, 50 grams and 170 milligrams of heroin were seized during raids

A team of officers of the Special Operations Unit, Police Special Task Force Headquarters, arrested a person in possession of 173 grams of narcotic-ice in the Ela Ivura Road, Wattala on the night of 06.04.2025 and produced him to the Wattala Police Station. The suspect is a 32-year-old resident of Wattala. Wattala Police Station is conducting further investigations into the said person. Similarly, a team of officers from the Colombo Central Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau arrested a person in possession of 50 grams and 170 milligrams of heroin during a raid conducted on the night of 2025.04.06 in the Bandaria Lane of  Maradana Police Division, and produced him to the Maradana Police Station for further investigations. The suspect is a 55-year-old resident of Colombo 12.

A Large-scale illicit liquor hideout in Pamunugama raided

Officers of the Police Organized Crime Control Unit of Special Task Force raided an illicit liquor racket operating in the Muthurajawela area of Pamunugama on the morning of 06.04.2025, while taking into custody 378 liters of illicit liquor stored ready for sale, 3683 liters of Goda used for production, 12 copper coils, 30 barrels, and 12 cans, along with a number of other paraphernalia. One suspect has been arrested and has been produced to the Pamunugama Police Station for further investigations.

Three suspects were arrested in connection with homicide by shooting in Gandara, Hikkaduwa area

A woman and a man who stood close to a ready-made garment outlet in Kumarakanda, Hikkaduwa were shot by two unidentified persons on a motorcycle on the night of 03-04-2025. The man was dead and the woman was seriously injured. One suspect who was said to have aided and abetted the crime was arrested by officers of Hikkaduwa Police Station on 07.04.2025 in Ginimellagaha area of the Hikkaduwa Police Area. The suspect who is 23-year-old, is a resident of Gonapinuwala area. Further investigation has been conducted by Hikkaduwa Police Station. In addition to that, two suspects wanted in connection with the shooting two persons who were traveling on a motorcycle on 21-03-2025 in Sinhasana Road, Gandara area have surrendered to the Gandara Police Station on 07-04-2025 along with their lawyers. These suspects, who are at the age of 26 and 35, are residents of Gandara and Devinuwara areas.  Facts have been revealed that one of these two individuals is the shooter in this homicide incident. Further investigations are conducted in connection with these two suspects, who are currently in the custody of the Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division.

Meeting between local Red Cross officials and the Acting Inspector General of Police

To further sustain the long-standing cooperation between the Sri Lanka Police and the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, a meeting was conducted between the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, and local officials of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society on the morning of 08.04. 2025, at Police Headquarters. Wherever there is a war or disaster in the world, the Red Cross is well prepared to work with great dedication alongside security personnel, including police officers, to provide relief and assistance to those suffering from the disaster. It is commendable the unwavering support and assistance given by the officers of the Red Cross Organisation in Sri Lanka, especially during the nearly thirty-year war in the country, as well as in the training workshops and courses currently being conducted for police officers.

Rewards for officers for their excellent performance of duties in the Negombo Police Division

The ceremony held in recognition of the police officers, who had made a commendable contribution to police duty, exhibiting exceptional skills in solving crimes while performing duties in the Negombo Police Division, was held on the morning of 08th April 2025, at the Nethmi Banquet Hall of the Divulapitiya Police Area, under the leadership of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmarathne, with the participation of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province North Range. A reward of Rs. 22,539,150/= has been recommended for 914 officers performing duties attached to 12 police stations in the Negombo Division, and 125 officers were symbolically presented with cash rewards and IGP commendations during the ceremony. Gazetted Officers, Officers of the Inspector’s Grade, Police Sergeants, Women Police Sergeants, Police Constables, Women Police Constables, Police Sergeant Drivers, and Police Constable Drivers have become eligible to receive these cash rewards and IGP Commendations. Many police officers, including Senior Superintendent of Police of Negombo Division Mr. Ashoka Dharmasena, Senior Superintendent of Police of Gampaha Division Mr. Jagath Rohana, and Senior Superintendent of Police of Kelaniya Division Mr. Nuwan Asanka, also participated in this event.

The Avurudu Fair was held by the Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit

The Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit organized an Avurudu Fair with about 35 stalls to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year 2025 on 10.04.2025 from 0900 am to 0400 pm at the Police Headquarters premises under the patronage of the Chairperson of the Seva Vanitha Mother Unit, Mrs. Nilmini Samaratunga.  The opportunity has been provided to officers serving in the Sri Lanka Police to obtain ready-made clothing and food items needed during the festive season at subsidized prices. The Chairperson of the Police Headquarters Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit, Deputy Inspector General of Police Nishani Seneviratne, its Secretary, Inspector General of Police Nimali Fonseka, and many committee members of the Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit participated in this event.
