A suspect has been arrested for homicide

A 48-year-old man was killed by an unidentified person on 21. 11. 2024 near a Medical Office of Doramure Road, Walasgala. It has been uncovered during the initial investigations that a T-56 type firearm has been used for this homicide. Further investigations regarding the incident has been carried out and a suspect was arrested on 01. 12. 2024 in area of Bambaranda Central, Dickwella. The suspect was produced before the court on 02. 12. 2024. Having obtained detention order, further investigations will be conducted in this regards.

An exciting grand finale of the IG’s Trophy Taekwondo Tournament 2024

The grand finale of IG’s Trophy Taekwondo Tournament – 2024 was held on the 28.11.2024 at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo, and the South Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka has graced the evening as the chief guest, and the Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya (Attorney-at-Law) has participated in this event. The tournament was held in several stages, and it consisted of two categories – the veteran category and the novice category. After the final competition, certificate awarding ceremony was started. The officer, R. M. G. K. G. Pushpakumara 93065 of Police Special Task Force won the trophy and certificate as the best player in the veteran category while Police Constable 107099P. Thermilan who is attached to Police Division – Ampara, was awarded as the best player in the novice category. In the final contest of the novice category of the tournament, the Northern Province team was defeated by the Southern Province team by 29-20 points and the Southern Province team won the trophy for the novice championship. Accordingly, the Northern Provincebecome the first runner-up in the novice category. Police Special Task Force won the championship in the final battle of the tournament by defeating the Sri Lankan Police team by 36-11. Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Police team was the first runner-up in the veteran category. Police Sergeant A. G. C. I. Thushara won the award for the best referee of the tournament. Senior Police Officers including the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Training and Higher Training Division – Mr. Sanjeewa Medawatte, the Commandant of Special Task Force, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Waruna Jayasundara, the President of Police Taekwondo Association and D. The renovated unit of the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women has been formally established in a separate section within the Police Station- Pesalai in Mannar Island. The unit was declared open by Mr. Thilak Abeywickrama Dhanapala, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Northern Province on 26.11.2024, followed by a brief ceremony.The objective of setting up the Bureau in a new place to create a suitable environment for the children and women in the area to lodge complaints regarding the crimes they experience or problems they encounter, whilst preserving their privacy.Action are being taken to establish Children and Women Bureaus, to extend a service in such a formal and friendly manner, in every police station as per the instructions and orders of the acting Inspector General of Police (Attorney at Law), Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, and that will provide opportunity for children as well as women to get justice served more conveniently. As per the orders given by the Inspector General of Police, a Unit of the Bureau for Children and Women, dedicated to serve children and women, should be formally established and maintained in every police station. The new Unit of the Bureau for children and Women of Mannar Headquarters Station, which was thus renovated, was declared open today, 26.11.2024, under the leadership of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Northern Province, Mr. Thilak Abeywickrama Dhanapala.Female police officers proficient in both Sinhala and Tamil languages have been attached to this Unit.The ability to explain women and children’s problems preserving their privacy and arranging the office environment in a mentally relaxing manner are among the main objectives of this project. Ice drug and heroin worth more than Rs 220 million found in a lorry.

Two suspects have been arrested today, 26 – 11 – 2024, during a raid conducted in the area of Watareka of Meegoda Police area, by the Special Task Force, for keeping the possession of 57 kg of ice drug and 29 kg of heroin. Value of the drugs stashed away in a lorry parked near a house has been estimated as Rs 220 million. Facts have been revealed during the investigation that the drugs belonged to a large-scale drug smuggler and organized criminal named Unapurawe Shantha. The suspects arrested during the raid are two close relatives of Unapurawe Shantha, and they are at the aged of 41 and 31 years, and residents of Moragahahena and Thalavatugoda areas. Acting Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasuriya (Attorney-at-Law) and Commandant of the Special Task Force, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Varuna Jayasundara (Attorney-at-Law) inspected the drugs detained, and instructed to handover the drug to the Police Narcotics Control Bureau. Accordingly, further investigations are being carried out by the Narcotics Control Bureau.
