Public Awareness on Online Fraud During the Festive Season

During the Sinhala and Hindu New Year period, many people rely on the internet to carry out various transactions, including purchasing goods and making payments. However, this time of increased online activity has also led to a rise in cybercrime, with offenders using diverse tactics to illegally obtain money and sensitive personal information. Based on complaints received by police stations and the Criminal Investigation Department in recent years, it has been observed that certain individuals become vulnerable to these scams, often due to financial pressures and the temptation of quick financial benefits. Investigations have revealed that such online fraud is carried out through multiple methods, including deceptive advertisements, malicious links, Avurudu-themed promotions and giveaways, counterfeit trading platforms, fraudulent bank offers, fake bank websites or app updates, QR code scams, phishing emails, SMS-based scams, imitation websites designed to appear legitimate, and caller ID spoofing. Furthermore, scammers may exploit images of prominent figures such as the President, the Prime Minister, and well-known celebrities to create a false sense of trust and credibility. There is also an increased risk of targeted phishing attacks, financial scams, and identity theft through the misuse of personal data obtained via fraudulent means. In light of these risks, the Police urge the public to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and maintain a clear understanding when conducting online transactions, in order to avoid becoming victims of such criminal activities.

“Midigama Chuti” Arrested in Oman Returns to Sri Lanka

Under the intensively implemented “Ratama Ekata” national anti-drug initiative, the Sri Lanka Police has launched a coordinated program, in collaboration with state authorities, to repatriate suspects who are evading arrest overseas while engaging in criminal and drug trafficking activities within the country. As a further outcome of this operation, a 37-year-old suspect known as “Midigama Chuti,” identified as a key figure in organized crime and drug trafficking in the Southern Province, was escorted back to Sri Lanka from Oman in the early hours of 30.03.2026 by a special team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department. He is wanted in connection with multiple offences, including murder, robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and several shooting incidents reported in the Matara area. The suspect is to be produced before the courts for further inquiry and detention in relation to these offences. Investigations are also underway to initiate legal proceedings to confiscate assets believed to have been acquired through illegal means. These arrests were made possible through a joint operation involving Interpol, the Omani Police, and intelligence agencies. Even in the absence of red notices, necessary diplomatic channels have been effectively utilized to facilitate the return of suspects concealing themselves abroad.

Guidelines on Protecting Your Property from Theft and Robbery

The Sri Lanka Police is committed to educating the Public on the methods employed by criminals to rob, steal, or forcibly obtain property, including Money, Gold, and other valuables, and to provide guidance on how to protect oneself from such threats. Operating 24 hours a day, the Sri Lanka Police strives to maintain a safe environment where the public can live without fear and move freely to any location with confidence. Despite the deployment of officers across all police divisions nationwide and the implementation of various measures to preserve public safety, recent incidents reveal that individuals continue to fall victim to serious crimes due to negligence or lack of awareness. A recent example is the incident in the Kokkadicholai Police Division, where two women were abducted on two separate occasions, forcibly made to consume a substance that rendered them unconscious, robbed of their gold, one murdered, and the other narrowly escaping death. Considering this and similar cases, the Sri Lanka Police urges the public to exercise extreme caution in their daily lives and take note of the following points: • Be wary of strangers approaching you in a friendly manner in Public Places or on Public Transport.  • Avoid trusting individuals who attempt to act as close friends or acquaintances.  • Do not accept Toffees, Chocolates, other Foods or Beverages, or Drinking water offered by unknown persons, as these may be mixed with intoxicating or harmful substances.  • Be cautious of substances such as Poisonous Sprays or Chili Powder that can be used to Immobilize or Harm Individuals.  Additional safety precautions include: • Avoid accepting transportation from unknown persons on Highways or in Public Areas.  • Refrain from consuming Food or Drinks provided by strangers under any circumstances.  • Do not approach strangers or groups unnecessarily.  • Keep a close watch on your Money, Jewelry, and other valuables.  • If you notice any Suspicious Person, Vehicle, or Activity that suggests a Crime may be occurring, Immediately contact the Police through 119, 118, or Report to the nearest Police Officer or responsible citizen.  The Sri Lanka Police emphasizes that it is crucial to act with intelligence and awareness in accordance with these guidelines. Public are encouraged to share this information with Family, Friends, and Neighbors to Strengthen Community Awareness and prevent similar crimes.
