The gunman arrested over the shooting reported in the Hanwella area on 13. 08. 2025

The unidentified gunman who opened fire, injuring a person in the Pahathgama area in Hanwella on 13.08.2025, was arrested by the officers of the Western Province South Crime Division in the afternoon of 08.09.2025, in the Thunnaya area of the Hanwella Police area. The suspect is a 42-year-old resident of the Meegoda area. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a 12-bore firearm with 03 rounds of ammunition, which was taken into custody by the officers. It was previously disclosed that the gunman used a pistol during the shooting in the Pahathgama area. The Western Province-South Crime Division is continuing its investigation into the suspect and the respective weapon involved.

The appointment of Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya as the Acting President of the Sri Lanka Branch of the International Police Association took place on June 19, 2025, at the Police Headquarters. This appointment was made by the Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Branch of the International Police Association. Coinciding with this occasion, the first day cover, commemorative coin, commemorative gift, and medal issued for the 50th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Branch of the International Police Association were also presented to the Acting Inspector General of Police. The event was attended by the Secretary-General of the Sri Lanka Branch of the International Police Association, Woman Chief Police Inspector Sunethra Senavirathna, Vice Presidents (Retired Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Nuwan Wedasingha, Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Gamini Karunathilaka, and Retired Superintendent of Police Norton de Silva), and a group of senior police officers.
