A training programme on “Prevention of Child Abuse, Exploitation of Women and Children” for police officers

Accordingly, training courses are scheduled to be held for nearly 2250 officers attached to the Police Children and Women Bureaus islandwide, including junior officers and officers of the inspectors’ grade newly attached to this bureau. This training consists of 03 elements as a five-day course, 03-week course, and a diploma. The objective of this workshop is to identify the basic curriculum for improving the knowledge, skills and expertise of officers in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence. Under this initiative, this training program was conducted with the aim of preventing sexual and gender-based violence in collaboration with government agencies and civil organizations such as the Attorney General’s Department, the Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura and Kelaniya, National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses, National Child Protection Authority, Child Protection Force, Family Health Bureau, Department of Probation, etc. The official inaugural programme was held on 26.04.2025 and Senior Professor at the University of Kelaniya, Consultant Judicial Medical Officer, Ms. Anuruddhi Edirisinghe, Executive Director of the National Police Academy, DIG Jaliya Senarathne, DIG in charge of Children and Women Abuse Investigation Range, Renuka Jayasundara, Chief Administrative Officer of the National Police Academy SSP Nishantha Chandrasekara, Deputy Director, Police Academic Training ASP Namali Herath, and a number of officers of the Children and Women Bureau participated in this event. The Avurudu Fair was held by the Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit
The Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit organized an Avurudu Fair with about 35 stalls to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year 2025 on 10.04.2025 from 0900 am to 0400 pm at the Police Headquarters premises under the patronage of the Chairperson of the Seva Vanitha Mother Unit, Mrs. Nilmini Samaratunga. The opportunity has been provided to officers serving in the Sri Lanka Police to obtain ready-made clothing and food items needed during the festive season at subsidized prices. The Chairperson of the Police Headquarters Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit, Deputy Inspector General of Police Nishani Seneviratne, its Secretary, Inspector General of Police Nimali Fonseka, and many committee members of the Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit participated in this event. Police Motorcycle Patrol Unit, a new initiative operating in the Galle Range
The Motorcycle Patrol Unit operating within the Galle Range is a new initiative launched on 28 March, 2025, under the leadership of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Southern Province, Mr. Kithsiri Jayalath, at the In-service Training Unit Galle. This Motorcycle Patrol Unit has been established under a new systematic program and a 10-step plan is scheduled to be implemented to minimize road accidents in the area. Similarly, a tactical motorcycle team has also been attached to the Motorcycle Patrol Unit for this purpose and this unit has been established in such a way that it can be promptly deployed in the event of any emergency raid in the area. This program has been implemented according to a concept by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Galle Range, Mr. Jagath Seram, and many police officers, including Officers in charge of the Galle and Elpitiya Divisions, participated in this inaugural event. A New Children and Women’s Bureau for Mihintale
Marking another phase in the establishment of Children and Women’s Bureaus covering all parts of the island for offering services to the children and women, a new Children and Women’s Bureau was established at the Mihintale Police Station in the Anuradhapura Division under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Anuradhapura Division, Mr. Thilina Hewapathirana. On 07.03.2025, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the North Central Province, Attorney-at-law, Mr. Buddhika Siriwardhana, declared this new Children and Women’s Bureau open. Many officers including the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the North Central Range, the Assistant Superintendent of Police – Anuradhapura and the Officer in Charge of Police Station Mihintale, participated in this inauguration ceremony. Opening of the renovated Children and Women’s Bureau of Ginigathhena Police Station
The renovated Children and Women’s Bureau at Ginigathhena Police Station was opened on 08.03.2025 under the supervision of Hatton Superintendent of Police Pradeep Weerasekara of Hatton Division. The OICs of Ginigathhena, Norton Bridge and Polpitiya police stations and the OICs of the Children and Women’s Bureau also participated. On that occasion, stationary were distributed among 10 school children in the division and a brave woman was recognized on Women’s Day. The renovated Trincomalee Holiday Bungalow is open for you, Junior Police Officers
The holiday bungalow built and maintained in the Trincomalee Division for the Junior Police Officers and their family members was renovated and opened after making it more comfortable according to a concept by Mr. Chamika Wickramasinghe, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Trincomalee Division. The simple opening ceremony held traditionally was held on 06.02.2025 at the premises under the patronage of Mr. Dhammika Weerasekara, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Trincomalee Range, with the participation of all the Officers in charge of Districts and Officers in Charge of police stations in the Trincomalee Division. Badulla Police Station In line with the Independence Day
Officers of the Badulla Police Station distributed more than hundred coconut saplings, Mee saplings, improved coffee saplings and Kumbuk saplings to senior citizens living in the Andeniya area of Badulla in line with the 77th National Independence Day celebration. The said programme, organized under the patronage of P.M. Jayaratne, Badulla District (1), on the instructions given by Mr. Wasantha Kandawatte, Senior Superintendent of Police of Badulla Division, concluded as another successful programme on the morning of 04.02.2025 at the Sri Gangarama Purana Rajamaha Viharaya, Andeniya, Badulla under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Nelumwewe Dhammawansa Thera and Mr. T.M. Ratnayake, Headquarters Chief Inspector of Police, Badulla. To the Motherland, concurrence with Independence Day
Under the “CLEAN SRI LANKA” national program, an island-wide programme of planting 100,000 saplings has been initiated concurrence with the 77th National Independence Day, under the instructed by the Hon. Minister of Public Security, Mr. Ananda Wijepala. Marking ceremonious inauguration of the project which is implemented under the direct supervision of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. (Attorney-at-Law) Priyantha Weerasooriya, the tree planting program was conducted on 04 – 02 – 2025 at Crow Island, Mattakkuliya under the leadership of the Director of Police Environmental Protection Division – Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Manoj Perera. Saplings will be distributed to Police Stations with the support of the Department of Forest Conservation and the State Timber Corporation, and suitable locations such as Police Stations grounds, public gardens, lake reserves, river reserves and coastal areas will be selected for the tree plantation proramme. Saplings will be distributed having thoroughly considered different climatic conditions and environmental conditions of each area and province. Police Stations and Community Policing Committee members will take care of the saplings until those saplings become self-sustained. Police officers and officers-in-charge of Police Environment units in Colombo District planted saplings in this inaugural program.
