The IGP meets the Prime Minister

The IGP, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, met the Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and the Prime Minister’s Secretary, Mr. G.P. Saputhanthri, at the Prime Minister’s Office on the afternoon of 22.08.2025. The Prime Minister and the Secretary extended their congratulations to the new IGP, and the IGP presented the Prime Minister with a commemorative gift to commemorate this meeting.

Newly appointed IGP, Attorney-at-Law Mr Priyantha Weerasooriya met with officers at the STF Headquarters

IGP, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya visited the STF Headquarters this morning, 22.08.2025, and met with the officers on duty at the Headquarters, including the Commanding Officer of the STF, Deputy Inspector General of Police, D.G. Samantha de Silva. This is the first time that the IGP has paid an official visit to the STF Headquarters after assuming the duties  as the IGP. The IGP stated that the capabilities and strengths of the STF, which are making a special contribution to the maintenance of law and order, in particular the task of combating organized crime in the island, are a matter of great pride for the country and the Sri Lanka Police.

Regarding a fake letter circulating on Social Media

A letter that falsely claims to be an official document issued by the Inspector General of Police and other senior officers with their names and forged signatures is circulating on social media. The Computer Crime Division has launched an investigation to trace those responsible for creating and sharing the document on social media.

Main Suspects in Three Homicides by Shooting in the Meegoda and Borella Areas arrested

The person suspected to be the gunman in the incident in which a former Pradeshiya Sabha member was shot dead in the Gehenuwala area of Meegoda on 12.08.2025, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on 20.08.2025 in the Nagarawewa area within the Hambantota Police Area. Subsequently, investigating officers, guided by the suspect, recovered a locally manufactured 9 mm firearm, four 9 mm rounds of ammunition, two locally manufactured 12-bore firearms, and 06 grams of the Ice narcotic, which were hidden in the Hanwella area, and investigations have further revealed that the suspect had also attempted to carry out two other shootings in the Avissawella and Kollupitiya areas. The 34-year-old suspect, who is a resident of Barawakumbuka, is a former Army soldier.  The Criminal Investigation Department is continuing further investigations into this crime. * The motorcyclist involved in the crime, in which two individuals, who were waiting at the playground near Sirisara Uyana in Borella, were killed by shooting with an automatic firearm by two persons arriving on a motorcycle, was arrested by the Colombo Crime Division on 19.08.2025 in a lodging house in Kadawatha. Three other individuals sustained serious injuries in this shooting.   The arrested motorcyclist is a 25-year-old resident of Borella, and he was found in possession of 7,850 milligrams of heroin at the time of his arrest.  Four other suspects who had aided and abetted this crime were previously arrested during investigations carried out by the Colombo Crime Division, and a wealth of information has been uncovered regarding this shooting that was orchestrated by individuals residing overseas.  Further investigations are being carried out. *In addition, the suspect who killed an individual by assaulting him with a blunt weapon in the Wedamulla area of Peliyagoda was arrested by officers of the Peliyagoda Police Station in the early hours of 20.08.2025. The suspect is a 24-year-old resident of Wedamulla, Kelaniya.  Further investigations into him are being conducted by the Peliyagoda Police Station.

A new, fully-equipped Children and Women’s Bureau building for the Colombo North Division –

The new building of the Colombo North Division Children and Women’s Bureau, constructed within the Modara Police Station with modern facilities, was opened on 21.08.2025 in the afternoon under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya. The objective of establishing the Children and Women’s Bureau with modern facilities is to create a suitable environment for children and women in the area to file a complaint regarding a problem they have encountered or a crime they have faced, while protecting their privacy, and to create a suitable working environment to prevent crimes against them. This project to modernize children’s and women’s bureaus across the island is being implemented with the direct involvement of the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka and under the financial support of the Japanese Government from the United Nations Population Fund. Mr. Ohashi Kenji, First Secretary and Head of the Economic and Development Cooperation Section of the Japanese Embassy, participated as the chief guest in this event. Facilities such as a designated area for mothers who come to file complaints to breastfeed their children, areas for small children to play, and areas for women to rest have also been set up in this building. Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmaratne, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Colombo North Division, Mr. B.A. Rohan Pushpakumara, Director of the Child and Women Abuse Prevention Bureau, Ms. S.P. H.W.I.S. Muthumala, Executive Director of World Vision, which provided construction support, Dr. Dhanan Senathirajah, as well as the OICs and officers of the Colombo North Division, participated in this event.

During a raid conducted by the officers of the Kiribathgoda Police Station 21.07.2025, a suspect who was traveling in a three-wheeler while keeping possession of a T-56 firearm was arrested. Based on the information revealed by the suspect, officers of the Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau – Vavuniya arrested another suspect with hand grenades. Further investigation has been conducted, having taken the suspects into the custody of the Counter-Terrorism and Investigation Division. During the investigation, information on another suspect who keeps possession of hand grenades, and two more suspects who are involved in such activities, has been uncovered. A team of officers attached to the Counter-Terrorism and Investigation Division visited to Vavuniya in order to arrest these three suspects. A raid conducted to apprehend ten suspects aged between 20 and 30 years old together with firearms, ammunition, drugs and narcotic tablets

On the morning of 19.08.2025, officers from the Ganemulla Police Station have apprehended a repeater firearm, 08 rounds of ammunition, 09 T-56 magazines, 05 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, and 22 grams and 900 milligrams of Ice Narcotic while investigating a house in the Kossinna area of Prakandeniya; they have also arrested 06 suspects who were staying at that house. It has been revealed that the suspects, aged 20, 22, 23, and 28, are residents of the Rajagiriya, Borella, Malabe, Obeysekarapura, Katulandawatta, and Moratugasmulla areas. Based on the information revealed during the interrogation, four more suspects have been arrested in the Dalupotha area of the Negombo Police area, and the police officers found a foreign-made pistol, 06 ammunition, a uniform resembling an army uniform, 183 T-56 ammunition, 280 9 mm ammunition, 300 narcotic tablets, a handcuff, 03 passports belonging to some others, 02 scales used to weigh narcotics, 01 sealer, and 3 grams and 128 milligrams of Ice narcotic, in their possession. The four suspects, aged between 20 and 30, are residents of the Dalupatha, Katana, Kadirana, and Divulapitiya areas. 06 mobile phones, which were in their possession, have been taken into the custody of the police for investigations. Investigations have been initiated by detaining and interrogating suspects to apprehend others who have aided and abetted them.

Runner-up in an International Taekwondo Tournament

Police Inspector A. D. S. Amarasinghe of the Police Special Task Force, who participated in the 12th Seongnam Open International Taekwondo Championships held at the Seongnam Indoor Stadium in Korea on 19th and 20th of July 2025, organized by the Seongnam City Taekwondo Association and the Seongnam Open International Taekwondo Competition Organizing Committee, secured second place in the Power Braking category. Around 2500 athletes representing 22 countries have participated in this tournament and it is also noteworthy that Police Inspector Amarasinghe is the only officer who got the opportunity to participate in this tournament representing the Sri Lanka Police Taekwondo Pool. This officer has won the first place in the POWER BREAK (M) U 45 event at the 2022 World Police Taekwondo Championship on 20th November 2022. The salutation of all the officers of the Sri Lanka Police is extended to A. D. S. Amarasingha, who elevates the reputation of the Police Special Task Force internationally through such sporting achievements.

Two suspects arrested with 309 kilograms of Kerala cannabis

Officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau have arrested two suspects in possession of nearly 309 kilograms of Kerala cannabis in the Bangalawatta area of Wattala on the evening of 15.08.2025. Based on a piece of information disclosed, these suspects and the stock of Kerala cannabis were arrested after raiding a rented house in the Bangalawatta area. During the preliminary investigation, it is revealed that the suspects are 43 and 49 years of age and are residents of the Grandpass area. The Police Narcotics Bureau is conducting further investigations into this.

Suspect arrested with a number of firearms including a T-56 firearm

During the search conducted by the officers of the Minuwangoda Police Station on 15 – 08 – 2025, a number of firearms and ammunition have been uncovered from a house near the Minuwangoda Hospital. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. It has been revealed during the preliminary investigations that the 45-year-old suspect has been employed at Security Unit of the Katunayake International Airport. He is a resident of Minuwangoda area.
