Commendable Act of Honesty: Two Police Officers Return Foreign Tourist’s Lost Wallet Containing Rs. 600,000

On October 23, 2025, Woman Inspector of Police  Ms. Yamuna Dhammika Kumari Edirisinghe and Female Woman Police Constable Ms. Samanmali 12093, attached to the Prime Minister’s Security Division, demonstrated exemplary honesty by returning a lost wallet to its rightful owner, a British national, Ms. Sabrina Cameron. The wallet was found on Thimbirigasyaya Road in Narahenpita, and upon its discovery, the officers promptly reported the matter to the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Prime Minister’s Security Division. The OIC immediately informed the Director of the Division, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mr. Sumithra de Silva, who in turn coordinated with the Western North Crime Division. Based on the information contained in the wallet, the residence of Ms. Cameron was successfully identified. Subsequently, Ms. Sabrina Cameron visited the Prime Minister’s Security Division office, where the wallet was officially handed over to her by WIP Edirisinghe, under the supervision of the Division Director. At the time of recovery, the wallet contained Rs. 6,000 in cash, foreign currencies in US dollars and British pounds, bringing the total value to nearly Rs. 600,000. It also contained several local and international credit cards, a driver’s license, an identity card, and other essential documents. Expressing her appreciation, Ms. Cameron commended the integrity and professionalism of the Sri Lankan police officers and conveyed her heartfelt gratitude for their honesty and sense of duty.

Two buses found to have been obtained through drug trafficking have been taken into police custody

The investigations conducted against the suspect Nedungodege Nirmala Prasanga alias Backo Saman, who was arrested in Indonesia and identified as a drug trafficker and organized criminal, have led to the seizure of two luxury buses purchased and used by him. The Western Province North Crime Division, which is conducting investigations after it was revealed that these buses were purchased with money collected through illegal means such as drugs, went to the Pettah and Adiambalam areas on 23.10.2025 and took action to seize the buses. One of the buses was registered in the name of another person and was used to ply on the Colombo-Moneragala expressway. Investigations are underway regarding the registration. The other bus had been used for tourism. Investigations are underway by the Western Province North Crime Division.

Two firearms with archaeological value, and two Valampuri conch shells Seized

The Southern Provincial Special Operations Unit of the Police Special Task Force conducted a raid in the Udakelawa area of the Ambalangoda Police Area on the evening of 21.10.2025, on a piece of information received mentioning that 02 Valampuri conch shells and a pair of muzzle-loading pistols that reflects an archaeological value, were being prepared to be sold for about Twenty Million Rupees. One suspect was taken into custody along with the two Valampuri conch shells and two firearms during the raid, and the property and the suspect have been presented to the Ambalangoda Police Station for further action. The 55-year-old suspect is a resident of the same area. Further investigations are underway by the Ambalangoda Police Station.

Two suspects arrested in connection with stealing gold necklaces

Officers of the Anti-Corruption Unit of Ampara Police Division including OIC Sub-Inspector of Police, officer Priyankara of the said unit, succeeded in arresting two suspects involved in a number of gold necklaces stealing incidents reported from the Ampara Police Division on the afternoon of 21.10.2025. The two suspects, aged 27 and 31, are residents of Wawinna and Paragahakele areas. The arrests were made in the Alioluwa area of the Iginiyagala Police Area and through interrogation, 04 gold necklaces stolen in the Ampara, Iginiyagala, Central Camp and Samanthurai Police Areas were also taken into police custody. Since heroin was in possession at the time of arrest, it is suspected that these robberies were committed due to drug addiction. In order to uncover further information, the two suspects were produced before the Ampara Magistrate’s Court on 22.10.2025 and action has been taken to obtain detention orders.

Konara Mudiyanselage Kalana Himesh Bandara

A complaint has been received at the Maradana Police Station stating that a 28-year-old person named Himesh Bandara, a resident of Konara Mudiyanselage Kalana, has been missing since 25.08.2025. The missing person, a resident from the Radaliyadda Wewa Road Junction area in Bibila, was last seen working as a nurse at a hospital in the Colombo area. His wife has filed a complaint and if you have any information, we request you to immediately inform the Maradana Police Station on the following telephone numbers.

Publication of Unverified Photographs and Videos Related to Ongoing Investigations and Court Cases on Electronic, Print, and Social Media.

It has been observed that photographs, videos, or edited or unedited footage including AI-generated or AI-edited content  related to cases pending before courts, cases to be presented to courts in the future, and cases currently under investigation, are being circulated through various media platforms without verification. It has also been noted that such footage often pertains to drug raids, investigations into certain crimes, and other controversial incidents. Furthermore, the circulation of these photographs, videos, and edited or unedited AI-generated footage has been found to exert undue pressure on victims and witnesses, thereby creating adverse situations during ongoing investigations and court proceedings. According to the Establishments Code of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, there are restrictions on the provision of information to the media. Accordingly, only the Secretary to the Ministry, the Head of the Department, or any officer authorized at the discretion of the Head of the Department may provide information to the media. Therefore, photographs and video footage containing accurate and verified information regarding the above incidents will be released to all media organizations solely by the Police Media Division. The Sri Lanka Police will take full responsibility for all such officially released photographs and video footage. Therefore, media heads and individuals are hereby informed that they will be held accountable for disseminating false or unverified information, including edited or unedited photographs or videos as mentioned above. In such cases, the respective institutions and individuals will also be held liable if questioned by aggrieved parties in a court of law. However, it is kindly noted that this directive in no way violates or restricts the fundamental rights of citizens as guaranteed by the Constitution.

A suspect arrested while transporting 359,000 of intoxicant tablets

During a raid, the Vavuniya Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau was able to arrest a suspect who was transporting 359,000 of intoxicant tablets by a cab near Vavuniya Depot on 19.10.2025.  This stock of intoxicant tablets was attempted to be transported hidden among a stock of  dried fish, which was also identified as unfit for human consumption. The suspect is a 23 year old resident of Kalpitiya area. He was handed over to the Vavuniya Police Station to produce him before the court. Further investigations are underway by the Vavuniya Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau to uncover details about the network connection linked to this suspect.

Payment of traffic fines via GOV PAY is now available in the Southern Province

The Government Payment System (GOV PAY) has been provided to pay the fine you receive for a traffic violation in the Southern Province. This facility, which was initiated as a pilot project in 14 police stations in the North Western Province, including Kurunegala and Anuradhapura, and the North Central Province, was subsequently successfully implemented in the Western Province and along the expressway, and steps have been taken to provide it to police stations in the Southern Province as well. Chairman of the Task Force on Digital Affairs of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Harsha Purasinghe, said during a press conference held at the Government Information Department on 20.10.2025 that fines worth about 30 million rupees have been collected through the Govpay online payment facility launched jointly by the Ministry of Digital Economy, ICTA and Lankapay. Accordingly, the fines have been collected about 20,000 times, he further stated.  The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Division in the Southern Province and the Western Province Traffic Division, Mr. W.P.J. Senadheera, stated that the necessary facilities, telephones and knowledge have been provided to the police stations to provide this facility to the public and this is being done further. Mr. W.P.J. Senadheera stated that this system should be used without hesitation to minimize time and effort and that the most important thing is to drive safely so as not to receive a fine.  To pay the fine through this system, you can ask for instructions from the police officer who issues the fine slip/card and after payment, you can collect your driving license at the same time. If necessary, you can also pay at a later time by referring to the instructions at https://govpay.lk/si/spot-fine. The facility to pay fines through GOV pay is scheduled to be implemented in the Northern Province next.

Opening of the Proceeds Of Crime Investigation Division – PCID

The new division – Proceeds Of Crime Investigation Division (PCID), established to investigate the innocence of a citizen of this country if the manner in which he or she acquired assets is questionable, and to take relevant legal steps such as confiscation of the property if the acquisition was made illegally, was inaugurated on the morning of 20.10.2025 at the old building used as the Police Headquarters under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ananda Wijepala. The Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Mr. Ravi Seneviratne, the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, and senior police officers representing the investigation divisions participated in this event. Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Asanga Karawita, who has been instrumental in the powers vested in the Sri Lanka Police under the Proceeds of Crime Act, No. 05 of 2025, which came into force on 01.06.2025 by virtue of the Extraordinary Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka No. 2438/51 dated 27.05.2025, will act as the Director General of this new division. It is noteworthy that if it is discovered that someone has acquired immovable or movable property or money through drug trafficking, organized crime or other illegal criminal activity, this division has the ability to take action under the relevant Act to distribute that value to the victims of that crime, beyond the scope of confiscation of that property and money used in this country and abroad. 46 officers of the rank of Inspector of Police have already been assigned to start the investigation of this new division under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which gives higher powers to the Commission for the Investigation of Bribery and Corruption and the Sri Lanka Police, and the power to conduct investigations has been given only to the Inspector Grade under the Act. Junior officers will be assigned to assist them. If a suspect charged under this Act fails to prove his or her innocence beyond reasonable doubt, i.e., beyond the (50%) threshold, in a case filed by the Proceeds of Crime Investigation Division, before the court, steps will be taken to confiscate the money and property suspected of having been illegally acquired or to direct it to the victim, even if he or she is released on bail.

Sri Lanka Police Celebrates Deepavali with Unity and Devotion

The festival of Deepavali, celebrated with great devotion by Hindus across the world to mark the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness, falls on October 20, 2025. Recognizing the importance of religious harmony in fostering peace and unity in Sri Lanka a nation progressing with a spirit of brotherhood the Sri Lanka Police, under the direction of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, has initiated special security and facilitation measures over the next two days. These efforts aim to ensure that the Hindu community can celebrate the Deepavali festival safely and joyfully in all Tamil-populated regions of the country. As part of these celebrations, the main Deepavali ceremony of the Sri Lanka Police was held on October 18, 2025, at the Bambalapitiya Kadireshan Kovil. The event brought together serving and retired Tamil police officers in a vibrant display of cultural and religious unity. Organized by the Buddhist and Religious Affairs Association of the Sri Lanka Police, the event was graced by the presence of the Hon. Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, as the chief guest. The religious observance featured traditional Hindu rituals and captivating cultural performances that highlighted the spirit of Deepavali. The event concluded successfully with the participation of several senior police officers, including Senior DIG (Administrative Division) Mr. Lalith Pathinayake, Senior DIG (Western Province) Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmaratne, Senior DIG (Training and Advanced Training Division) Mr. S.C. Medawatte, and DIG (Colombo Division) Mr. Nishantha Zoysa, among others. The celebration served as a meaningful reminder of Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity and the Sri Lanka Police’s continued commitment to promoting peace, unity, and mutual respect among all communities.
