Six individuals involved in hunting animals in the Yahalatenna area were arrested

Villagers of the Yahalatenna area, Peradeniya, have captured six people who had come to the area for hunting animals in the dawn of 09.03.2025 and handed them over to the Peradeniya Police Station.  According to the information provided by the villagers, officers of the Peradeniya Police Station, who were on night patrol, went to the relevant place and took the six suspects into their custody, and while searching, they found 03 No. of 12 bore cartridges, 03 blank cartridges, an axe, a hand axe, 02 dragon lights, and a knife in their possession.  It was also witnessed that they had brought a carcass of a wild boar with them, and through questioning, a 12 bore firearm that was kept in a forest area by the side of the road in the Yahalatenna area was found at the same time.  Since these suspects are residents of the Mawathagama area who are aged between 28 and 71 years, steps have been taken to inform the Mawathagama Police Station. Accordingly, officers of the Mawathagama Police Station searched a house in the Kotikapala area of Mawathagama, where one of the above suspects resides, and found items including 04 No. of 12 bore firearms, ammunition of tem, a revolver, 03 hand axes, a set of clothes similar to military uniforms, a wig, 02 pairs of handcuffs, and an air pistol in the said house.  The Peradeniya and Mawathagama Police Stations carry out further investigations regarding these suspects.

Property acquired through illegal practices has been forfeited

The Illegal Assets Investigation Division has taken actions to forfeit the property belonging to two suspects who were arrested in the Ekala, Ja-Ela on 11.03.2025 for the offences of smuggling illegal liquor and heroin. Such measures have been taken under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Consequently, freezing injunction has been obtained on a motor van and a motor car worth Rs. 23,500,000/-(Twenty Three Million and Five Hundred Thousand), a three-wheeler worth Rs. 1,200,000/-(One Million and Two Hundred Thousand) and a plot of land containing in the extent of 38 perches worth of Rs. 1,900,000 /- (One Million and Nine Hundred Thousand). The two suspects are at the age of 39 and 63, and are residents of Ekala, Ja-Ela. Further investigations on the suspects are conducted by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with fraud over 40 Million Rupees

You may have seen attractive advertisements such as “Attractive interest on deposits” circulating on social media from time to time under the names of various individuals and institutions. Despite the constant reminders made by the Police and other government institutions to the Public pointing out the insecurity of such financial transactions with any party which has not been registered under the regulation of the Central Bank, another group of people who lost approximately 4.5 Million Rupees through such deposits, had filed complaints recently to Police Stations island wide. Having identified a woman involved in the fraud, facts have been reported to the Court by Police Station, Hatton. Accordingly, Magistrate’s Court Hatton issued a warrant to arrest of the suspect in connection with the incident. Based on the facts revealed during the investigation, the Police Officers took measures to arrest her near the Railway Station Hatton on 09.03.2025. The suspect is a 31-year-old women, residing at Kandegedara, Badulla.

A New Children and Women’s Bureau for Mihintale

Marking another phase in the establishment of Children and Women’s Bureaus covering all parts of the island for offering services to the children and women, a new Children and Women’s Bureau was established at the Mihintale Police Station in the Anuradhapura Division under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Anuradhapura Division, Mr. Thilina Hewapathirana. On 07.03.2025, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the North Central Province, Attorney-at-law, Mr. Buddhika Siriwardhana, declared this new Children and Women’s Bureau open. Opening of the renovated Children and Women’s Bureau of Ginigathhena Police Station

The renovated Children and Women’s Bureau at Ginigathhena Police Station was opened on 08.03.2025 under the supervision of Hatton Superintendent of Police Pradeep Weerasekara of Hatton Division. The OICs of Ginigathhena, Norton Bridge and Polpitiya police stations and the OICs of the Children and Women’s Bureau also participated. On that occasion, stationary were distributed among 10 school children in the division and a brave woman was recognized on Women’s Day. Programs held for Women Police Officers in conjunction with International Women’s Day

This year also, the Sri Lanka Police have organized and conducted several programs across the island to mark International Women’s Day (March 8). Among them, the program organized by the Police Seva Vanitha Sub-Unit was held on 12.03.2024 at the Auditorium of the Police Crime Records Division, Colombo, under the patronage of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, and with the participation of his spouse, the Chairperson of the Police Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Nilmini Samaratunga. A lecture on personal and career development by veteran lecturer, Mr. Udaya Dewamulla; a lecture full of medical advice by Dr. Darshana Abeygunawardana, gynecologist; and a lecture on healthy living by Mr. Charith Gunathunga, nutritionist, were successfully conducted by the said guest speakers, and at the end of the program, all the women police officers who participated in this event representing functional divisions and police stations were presented with mementos to mark the event. The senior police officers, including Vice President of the Seva Vanitha Unit, Woman Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mrs. Nishani Senevirathna, in charge of Research and Information Technology Range, and the Secretary of the Seva Vanitha Unit, Woman Chief Police Inspector, Mrs. Nimali Fonseka, also participated in this event. The Vice President of the Seva Vanitha Unit, Research and Information Technology Directorate, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ms. Nishani Seneviratne, was present. The Secretary of the Unit, Ms. Chief Inspector of Police, Ms. Nimali Fonseka, and several senior police officers participated in the event.

An individual who was arrested in Kaduwela area in connection with a stolen lorry, is a suspect of many such crimes

 Officers of Kaduwela Police Station have arrested an individual who has stolen a lorry in Wattala Police Area in the dawn of 01.03.2025, and drove the lorry without comply with orders to stop. The officers had to open fire a few times to stop the vehicle. The suspect, who is a 25-year-old, is a resident of Kelaniya area. Kaduwela Police Station has initiated an extensive investigation on the suspect who is being detained and interrogated. Facts have been revealed he has involved in many other crimes. As per the facts have been uncovered during the investigation, the suspect has stolen a car and 03 motorcycles from Kaduwela Police Area, a three-wheeler from Balumandal Police Area and 02 three-wheelers from Peliyagoda Police Area. Investigating Officers have found those three number of three-wheelers and take them into Police custody. Kaduwela Police Station is conducting further investigations on the suspect.

Inspector General of Police praises the Police Cycling Team

Sub-Inspector of Police (Support Services) Chamod de Silva, who competed under number 96 for the Air Force Cycle Tour 2025, won the championship of the entire tour by securing second place in the first stage and first place in the second stage. Acting Inspector General of Police (Attorney at Law) Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya called the respective athlete and ten other athletes who participated in the tour representing the Sri Lanka Police to the Police Headquarters on the morning of 04.03.2025 and praised and congratulated the athletes and the officials for their performance and dedication on behalf of Sri Lanka Police. At the invitation of the Inspector General of Police, a group of senior police officers from the police headquarters, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Sampath Kumara Liyanage, in charge of the cycling team, and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Manoj Ranagala, the secretary, also participated in this event.
