Rewards for officers for their excellent performance of duties in the Kelaniya and Gampaha Police Divisions

The ceremony held in recognition of the police officers, who had made a commendable contribution to police duty, exhibiting exceptional skills in solving crimes while performing duties in the Kelaniya and Gampaha Police Divisions, was held on 09th April 2025, at the Ramrich Reception Hall of the Ja-Ela Police Area, under the leadership of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmarathne, with the participation of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province North Range, Mr. Priyantha Liyanage. A reward of Rs. 12,916,300/- has been granted for 75 officers performing duties attached to 13 Police stations in the Kelaniya Division including Western Province North Crime Division and Western Province North Traffic Division, and a reward of Rs. 15,509,437.50/- has been granted for 54 officers performing duties attached to 18 Police stations in the Gampaha Division. Officers of the Inspector’s Grade, Police Sergeants, Women Police Sergeants, Police Constables, Women Police Constables, Police Sergeant Drivers, and Police Constable Drivers have become eligible to receive these cash rewards. Many police officers, including Senior Superintendent of Police of Kelaniya Division Mr. Nuwan Asanka, Senior Superintendent of Police of Gampaha Division Mr. Jagath Rohana, and Senior Superintendent of Police of Negombo Division Mr. Ashoka Dharmasena, also participated in this event.

A suspect was arrested in possession of 16 Kg and 960 g of Kerala Cannabis, Three individuals were arrested in possession of 15 Kg and 180 g of Kerala Cannabis

A group of officers attached to the Police Special Task Force-Kilinochchi camp have arrested an individual who was travelling by motorcycle in possession of 16 kg and 960 g of Kerala cannabis on the Aleadi road, Kilinochchi, around 12:10 a.m. on 02.04.2025, and the said individual was produced to the Kilinochchi Police Station for further investigations. Accordingly, investigations are being conducted by the Kilinochchi Police Station regarding the suspect, a resident of the Bharathipuram area, and to arrest accomplices associated with the suspect. Moreover, three suspects who were in possession of 15 kg and 180 g of Kerala cannabis were arrested while staying in Ganeshapuram, Nellikulam, in the morning of 02.04.2025 during a raid carried out by the officers in the Special Task Force – Vavuniya Camp. Further investigations are being carried out by the Police Station, Nellikulam regarding those suspects.

Two firearms were seized in a search on suspicion

Officers of the Southern Province Special Operations Unit of the Police Special Task Force have arrested a person who was riding a motorcycle in possession of a foreign-made pistol in the Rathgama, Boossa area, on the evening of 02.04.2025. According to a piece of information disclosed during further questioning of the suspect, who is 32 years old and a resident of the Rathgama area, a 60-year-old woman who was a resident of the same area was also taken into custody on the same day in possession of a micro pistol and 09mm ammunition. They have been handed over to the Rathgama Police Station for further investigations, and the Rathgama Police Station is conducting further investigations regarding these firearms and the suspects.

Passing out of a batch of STF probationary officers who successfully completed the Basic Training Course

The Passing Out Ceremony of the 82nd Basic Training Course of the Police Special Task Force was held at the Police Special Task Force Training School, Katukurunda, on the afternoon of 07.04.2025 under the auspices of the Hon. President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During the 82nd Police Special Task Force Training Course, 118 Probationary Sub Inspectors of Police, and 231 Probationary Police Constables have undergone basic training under 08 syndicates. Officer M. M. R. Perera was awarded and offered certificates as the best Probationary Sub Inspector of Police while Police Constable 105475 W. M. S. D. U. Dharmasiri as the best Probationary Police Constable. Out of these 08 syndicates, the 05th syndicate, trained under Inspector of Police – Mr. Theja Gunasekara received the award for the outstanding syndicate.  Furthermore, the Hon. President presented awards and certificates in recognition of Probationary Police Constable 105633 R. K. Y. P. P. Rajamanthri as the officer with the best physical fitness of the course, Probationary Police Constable 105864 H. D. K. T. Gunarathna as the best marksman of the course for using the T-56 weapon, Probationary Sub Inspector of Police, W. I. M. Perera as the best marksman of the course for using the M-16 weapon, and Probationary Sub Inspector of Police, O. G. C. J. Somasuriya as the best marksman of the course for using the pistol.   Thereafter, the officers of the Police Special Task Force presented an operational demonstration on a simulated battlefield exhibiting the skills acquired during the training.  The Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs  Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa, Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne, Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Priyantha Weerasooriya, Police Special Task Force Commandant, Deputy Inspector General of Police Samantha de Silva, Director Training Police Special Task Force and Zonal Commander Kalutara Senior Superintendent of Police Nishedha Fernando, high-ranking officers, police officers and parents and relatives of the passing-out officers also participated in this event.

On behalf of the support needed to complete the investigations quickly

In order to expedite the completion of various criminal investigations conducted by the Police Investigation Divisions under the leadership of the Criminal Investigation Department, the Sri Lanka Police is entering into Memorandum of Understandings with other institutions that can provide useful data in connection with these investigations, with the aim of improving mutual cooperation with those institutions.     Accordingly, Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya signed bi- lateral MoU agreements with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, Gem & Jewelry Authority, Government Valuation Department and National Planning Center on 03rd of April 2025, in connection with investigations into money laundering and the financing of terrorism. Acting Inspector General of Police Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya on behalf of Sri Lanka Police, Chairman and chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mangala Wijesingha, on behalf of Sri Lanka Export Development Board, Government chief Valuation Officer, Mr. A, S, W. K. Nanayakkara representing Government Valuation Department, Chairmen and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Anthony Naweendra representing Gem & Jewelry Authority ,Chairman Mr. Sisira Amarabandu representing National Planning Center participated in this occasion of signing the Memorandum of Understanding Agreement.         Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Superintendent of Police, Mrs. Imesha Muthumali, Director of the Legal Division, Mr. D.M.N.C. Somasingha participated in this event.

Rewards to Police officers who performed excellent duties in Nugegoda and Mount Lavinia Divisions

The ceremony in recognition of the Police Officers, who demonstrated exceptional prowess in solving crimes and made commendable contributions to Police duty while discharging duty in Nugegoda and Mount Lavinia Police Divisions, was held on 01-04-2025 at the Water Supply and Drainage Board Auditorium, Mount Lavinia under the leadership of the Senior D.I.G. in charge of Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmaratne. 185 officers from 28 Police stations in those divisions have been selected to offer rewards, and 40 Police officers out of them symbolically received their awards during the ceremony. Measures have been taken to reserve a total amount of Rs. 26.5 million to 185 prize winners. Rs. 17.5 million was allocated to the officers of the Nugegoda Police Division and Rs. 9 million was allocated to the officers of the Mount Lavinia Police Division. Senior Police officers including the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western and Southern Range – Mr. G. Marapana, the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Nugegoda Division – Mr. Mangala Dehideniya, and the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Mount Lavinia, Mr. Brahmana have participated in this event.

The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and Baseline Road are scheduled to be closed on several occasions from 06.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. on 04.04.2025.

Official Visit of Hon. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi 04.04.2025 , 05.04.2025 The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and Baseline Road are scheduled to be closed on several occasions from 06.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. on 04.04.2025. During that period, drivers arriving towards the Katunayake International Airport using the Expressway and drivers using the Baseline Road are informed to plan their travel taking the road closures into consideration. Furthermore, the roads in the areas of Galle Face, Independence Square, and Battaramulla ‘Apegama’ precincts are also scheduled to be closed on several occasions on 05.04.2025. During this period, traffic officers have been instructed to direct drivers to alternative routes to minimize traffic congestion and inconvenience caused to drivers. The general public are kindly requested to extend the support necessary for this special traffic plan being implemented by the Sri Lanka Police with regard to Hon. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka.

A T-56 firearm, 04 magazines, and 113 bullets were found hidden in the kitchen of a house in Heenkenda, Ragama

On the morning of 01.04.2025, officers of the Wattala Police Station had received information that a woman had hanged herself in a lodge in Hendala, Wattala. Having arrived and inspected the scene, they had found a woman unconscious in a room. Upon examination of the woman, who regained consciousness shortly after, they found 06 grams and 100 milligrams of the narcotic ice in her possession. She was interrogated, and it was revealed that she had a close contact with a drug trafficker living abroad. During further interrogation, information was revealed about a T-56 firearm that the trafficker had given her about a year ago. The team of officers inspected a house in Heenkenda, Ragama, where her husband resides, and found a T-56 firearm, 04 magazines used for the said weapon, and 113 bullets hidden in the kitchen. Her 40-year-old husband has also been arrested. The arrested suspect is a 35-year-old resident of Colombo 15. Further investigations are being conducted by the Wattala Police Station regarding the female suspect and the male suspect.

A suspect arrested for posting AI- generated nude pictures of women

A suspect in connection with two similar incidents of creating and posting AI-generated fake nude pictures of two women was arrested on 29.03.2025 by the Auradhapura Sub Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department. The suspect was a 20-year-old resident in the Saliyapura, Anuradhapura area. He has been remanded until 10.04.2025 after being produced before the Magistrate’s Court, Anuradhapura.

Ja-Ela Othkele and Bhallakada marshes raided and 200 barrels of Goda (40500 liters) seized

Officers of the Western Province North Crime Division arrested a suspect with 40500 liters (200 barrels) of Goda used to brew illicit liquor and 843 liters of illicit liquor from Ja-Ela Othkele marshes on the morning of 29.03.2025. In another raid conducted in the Hallakkada marshes, two suspects were arrested with 5481 liters (29 barrels) of Goda, 225 liters of illicit liquor, 03 copper coils and 02 gas stoves. The suspects are 30, 32, and 50 year old residents of Ekala and Dolosbage areas.
