IGP calls on Defence Secretary.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, paid a courtesy call on the Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal H. S. Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), on the morning of 25. 08. 2025, at the Ministry of Defence. This is the first official meeting between the Inspector General of Police and the Defense Secretary after assuming the office of Inspector General of Police. The Inspector General of Police presented a commemorative plaque to the Defence Secretary, marking the occasion, and the Defence Secretary extended his greeting to the Inspector General of Police.

The IGP meets the Prime Minister

The IGP, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, met the Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and the Prime Minister’s Secretary, Mr. G.P. Saputhanthri, at the Prime Minister’s Office on the afternoon of 22.08.2025. The Prime Minister and the Secretary extended their congratulations to the new IGP, and the IGP presented the Prime Minister with a commemorative gift to commemorate this meeting.

Newly appointed IGP, Attorney-at-Law Mr Priyantha Weerasooriya met with officers at the STF Headquarters

IGP, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya visited the STF Headquarters this morning, 22.08.2025, and met with the officers on duty at the Headquarters, including the Commanding Officer of the STF, Deputy Inspector General of Police, D.G. Samantha de Silva. This is the first time that the IGP has paid an official visit to the STF Headquarters after assuming the duties  as the IGP. The IGP stated that the capabilities and strengths of the STF, which are making a special contribution to the maintenance of law and order, in particular the task of combating organized crime in the island, are a matter of great pride for the country and the Sri Lanka Police.

A new, fully-equipped Children and Women’s Bureau building for the Colombo North Division –

The new building of the Colombo North Division Children and Women’s Bureau, constructed within the Modara Police Station with modern facilities, was opened on 21.08.2025 in the afternoon under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya. The objective of establishing the Children and Women’s Bureau with modern facilities is to create a suitable environment for children and women in the area to file a complaint regarding a problem they have encountered or a crime they have faced, while protecting their privacy, and to create a suitable working environment to prevent crimes against them. This project to modernize children’s and women’s bureaus across the island is being implemented with the direct involvement of the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka and under the financial support of the Japanese Government from the United Nations Population Fund. Mr. Ohashi Kenji, First Secretary and Head of the Economic and Development Cooperation Section of the Japanese Embassy, participated as the chief guest in this event. Facilities such as a designated area for mothers who come to file complaints to breastfeed their children, areas for small children to play, and areas for women to rest have also been set up in this building. Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmaratne, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Colombo North Division, Mr. B.A. Rohan Pushpakumara, Director of the Child and Women Abuse Prevention Bureau, Ms. S.P. H.W.I.S. Muthumala, Executive Director of World Vision, which provided construction support, Dr. Dhanan Senathirajah, as well as the OICs and officers of the Colombo North Division, participated in this event.

Greetings from the Minister of Public Security, Deputy Minister and The Secretary

The Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Mr Priyantha Weerasooriya, met with the Hon. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ananda Wijepala, the Hon. Deputy Minister of the Ministry, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Sunil Watagala, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Retired Senior DIG, Mr. D.W.R.B. Seneviratne, on the afternoon of 20.08.2025, at the Ministry of Public Security. The two Ministers and the Secretary congratulated Mr. Weerasooriya for successfully assuming his duties as the IGP, and the IGP presented them  commemorative gifts to commemorate the meeting.

Presenting the Silver Play Button to the IGP

The Sri Lanka Police official YouTube channel, maintained by the Police Media Division, was recently awarded the Silver Play Button for reaching one hundred thousand subscribers. The said award was officially handed over to the Inspector General of Police by the Police Media Spokesperson, Director of the Police Media Division, Mr. F. U. Wootler, and the Supervising Officer of the Web and Social Media Branch of the Police Media Division, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr. Minura Senarath, at the Police Headquarters on the morning of 19.08.2025. On this occasion, the IGP stated that the Police Media Division’s unique ability to present information to the general public through creative videos on programmes for raising public awareness as well as on commendable community welfare work and humanitarian acts performed by Sri Lanka Police, has helped reach the goal of 100,000 subscribers in a short period of time. He further added that this achievement is an important milestone in the efforts to further strengthen the relations between the Sri Lanka Police and the general public. The IGP expressing his views stated that this YouTube channel should be further maintained in an attractive manner to convey accurate information to the public in the course of maintaining law and order, and that it is a special achievement for the Sri Lanka Police as a public institution to be able to receive this award of recognition, which is bestowed upon creative and quality channels worldwide for reaching the threshold of one hundred thousand subscribers.

98th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Police Savings Association

The Police Savings Association, which was founded in 1924 by the then Superintendent of Police, Mr. J.D. Aitkin, to assist police officers in financial difficulties they may encounter in their personal lives, is successfully maintained under proper procedures and in a manner suitable for today’s world. Its 98th Annual General Meeting was held on the afternoon of 18th August 2025 at the DIG’s office in Colombo under the patronage of Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya.  Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rajitha Sri Daminda, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Police Savings Association, along with senior police officers and member officers of the association, participated in this event.  A new board of officers was appointed to key positions in the association, including the Inspector General of Police, who will be constitutionally appointed as the association’s chairman, and new proposals and ideas were presented.

The 37th Inspector General of Police of Sri Lanka assumed duties on 14 August 2025

Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya assumed duties as the 37th Inspector General of Police of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka this morning, 14.08.2025. The IGP, amidst a salute from the police and police Special Task Force officers, arrived at Colombo 02 after arriving at the Police Headquarters, engaging in religious rituals and receiving the blessings of the Maha Sangha and priests of all religions, he commenced his duties at an auspicious time and addressed all parties present for this short ceremony and expressed his views. The IGP, who had overcome various challenges and milestones in his police career with determination and dedication, reflected on the journey he had taken so far, step by step. The IGP stated that he is committed to further implementing the crime prevention process and the police service in a stronger, more planned manner. He stated that the necessary steps will be taken to effect a massive transformation to make the Sri Lanka Police a more prestigious and proud service among the public than before.

Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya Appointed as the 37th Inspector General of Police of Sri Lanka

In a significant development for the Sri Lanka Police, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya has been officially appointed as the 37th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. This appointment was made by His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake following the formal endorsement of the Constitutional Council. Mr. Weerasooriya, a seasoned law enforcement officer and legal professional, ceremonially assumed duties at Police Headquarters on the morning of 14th August 2025. His extensive experience within the police service and legal expertise are expected to bring renewed leadership to the force during a pivotal time for the nation. Weerasooriya Liyana Arachchige Saman Priyantha who was born on 09th of February, 1969, received his basic education at Nehinna Kanishta Vidyalaya, Dodangoda, and then he completed his secondary education at Gnanodaya Maha Vidyalaya, Kalutara. Having passionately chosen Sri Lanka Police as his career path, while pursuing his studies, he joined the Police hierarchy through a junior rank on 20.05.1988. He then excelled at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in 1990 and was selected to the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo. Thereafter, he was recruited as a probationary Sub Inspector of Police in 1992 under the direct recruitment to the rank of Sub Inspector of Police. While discharging duties in the police service, he successfully completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo from 1993 to 1998. Subsequently, considering his degree as a basic entry qualification, he was directly recruited as a probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1999. When he was receiving his basic training in the new post, he took oath as a Notary Public, Commissioner for Oaths, and an Attorney at Law from the Supreme Court in 1999.In addition to that, he has obtained a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management from the University of Colombo. He was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police in 2007, to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police in 2012, to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2016, and to the rank of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2020. Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya was appointed by the President subject to the approval of the Constitutional Council to act in the office of the Inspector General of Police with effect from 27.09.2024, as he was an efficient and experienced officer in administrative and field duties, who has performed duties as a Director, Officer in charge of several Police Divisions, a Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Ranges, and a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Provinces, during his service period of 37 years. Several projects have also been actively implemented by conducting various surveys on the diverse duties and necessary infrastructure of the police service. As a result, giving greater attention to the welfare of police officers, the issuance of uniforms, sportswear sets, sports shoes, and bed sheets to be used in special duties of police officers was also introduced by Mr.Priyantha Weerasooriya. While performing duties as the Acting Inspector General of Police, he has worked in cooperation with International Police, for the arrest and extradition of criminals from foreign countries, fostering strong relations at the diplomatic level. Moreover, new recruitments in the Junior and Inspectors’ Grades were expedited. Work has been initiated to approve the Schemes of Recruitment of the Junior and Inspectors’ Grades and the Executive Grade as well as to resolve issues related to promotions. Functioning of IG’s Public Assistance Chamber, holding public assistance days, introducing WhatsApp groups for lodging public complaints and providing information at any time, initiating pilot projects such as ‘Govpay’ at the level of Headquarters Station, establishing provincial Crime Investigation Divisions and improving the quality of the police service are such significant tasks carried out during his tenor as the Acting IGP. Positive initiatives, such as effectively monitoring the duties of police officers, identifying underperforming officers, and terminating the service of officers convicted of corruption, are long-term plans established to achieve excellence in the Sri Lanka Police Service. For this, rather than opting for simple fixes, finding more complex and long-term solutions by obtaining proper guidelines from the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, such as making plans to acquire new housing complexes to increase the number of official quarters for married officers, is an effective task.      Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, has successfully completed many foreign and local courses, including the Life Saving Training Course for Officers in the United States of America, the Long Course on Security in Bangladesh, the Law Enforcement and Management Course in Vietnam, and Australia, the Course on Management and Administration in Thailand, the Course on Implementation and Evaluation in Malaysia, the Security Technology Course in Russia, the Course on White Collar Crimes in the United States of America, and the Course on Artificial Intelligence and Leadership by the Royal Malaysia Police. Further, he has also made a direct contribution to the United Nations Operations carried out in East Timor and Haiti from 2008 to 2011. With this new appointment, the Sri Lanka Police anticipates a continued commitment to upholding justice, strengthening law and order, and ensuring public trust under the guidance of IGP Attorney at Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya.
