Two More Suspects Arrested in Connection with the Murder Reported from the Hekittha Area on 19.07.2025

The Kelaniya Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau, which investigated the homicide committed by four unidentified persons having arrived in a three-wheeler and slashing a person in a two-storey house in the Hekittha area of the Wattala Police Area on the night of 19.07.2025, arrested a suspect involved in the crime on 04.08.2025 along with 04 swords used in committing the crime, and presented him to the Wattala Police Station.   Based on the information revealed by the suspect, two more suspects involved in the said crime and one suspect in connection with aiding and abetting a homicide in the Wattala area were arrested in the Modara area on the afternoon of 05.08.2025, along with two mobile phones used in the crime, and were presented to the Wattala Police Station.   The suspects, who are 17, 25, and 27 years old, are residents of the Colombo 15 and Wattala areas.   The Kelaniya Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau is conducting further investigations into the suspects and the above offences.

Two suspects arrested with three pistols

During a raid conducted by the Southern Province Special Operations Unit of the Police Special Task Force on 03.08.2025 in the Dewalapola area of the Minuwangoda Police Area, a suspect, along with a revolver manufactured in a foreign country and a motor bicycle suspected to be used for committing crimes, was arrested. The suspect, a 55-year-old resident of the Meegaspitiya area, has been produced to the Minuwangoda Police Station for carrying out further investigations. Similarly, a 41-year-old suspect who was in possession of two pistols manufactured in a foreign country was arrested and handed over to Ratnapura Police Station during a raid conducted on the same day in the Durekkanda area of the Ratnapura Police Area by a group of officers from Special Operations 1 of the Police Special Task Force Headquarters.

Property worth 130 million rupees under the suspect’s wife has been frozen

Based on the information received that a resident of the Hambegamuwa, Thanamalwila has illegally acquired assets through drug trafficking, an investigation has been initiated by the Illegal Assets Investigations Division under the provision of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and subsequently, suspect has been arrested on 28 – 05 – 2025. Upon reviewing the previous criminal records of this suspect, it has been revealed that he has been charged under the possession and trafficking of cannabis, aiding and abetting the transportation of cannabis, and concealing cannabis. During the investigation, it has been further unveiled that the property in the Embilipitiya area worth about 100 million rupees, has been acquired under his wife. Accordingly, measures have been taken to freeze the property acquired through the illegally earned money, and the order to freeze the property has been extended and enforced by the High Court – Embilipitiya, until 03 – 09 – 2025.  During the investigation conducted on 50-year-old wife of the suspect who has been arrested in Hambegamuwa on 30 – 07 – 2025, by the officers of the Illegal Assets Investigation Division, it has been revealed that another property worth Rs. 30 million has been purchased under the same suspect. Necessary steps have already been taken to freeze the said property in terms of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The relevant order has been extended and enforced by the High Court Tangalle until 17 – 09 – 2025. The Illegal Assets Investigation Division conducts further investigation in connection with this matter.

Establishment of Crime Division covering North Western Province

Concurrent with the reorganisation of the administrative structure of the Sri Lanka Police, each province is to be empowered with a Provincial Crime Division. Accordingly, the North Western Provincial Crime Division, built within the Wehera Police Complex, was declared open on 03.08.2025 under the leadership of the Hon. Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wijepala, with the participation of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasooriya. According to the duties expected to be discharged through this, Special Investigation Teams shall perform duties to suppress organised crime and criminal gangs, to thwart drug trafficking by debilitating the illegal drug network, and to prevent all crimes while enforcing the law against the said crimes in such a way that covers Puttalam, Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, and Nikaweratiya Police Divisions. Many senior officers, including Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the North Western Province, Attorney-at-Law Ajith Rohana, and Deputy Inspector General of Police of the North Western Range, Sarath Kumara, participated in this event.

School supplies for children of Police Officers in the North Western Province

The program to distribute school supplies to the children of Police Officers in the North Western Province, was held on 03 – 08 – 2025 at the auditorium of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala under the leadership of the Hon. Minister of Public Security, Mr. Ananda Wijepala. The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya (Attorney-at-Law), and Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of North Western Province, Mr. Ajith Rohana (Attorney-at-Law), have participated in the event. School supplies were distributed among a large number of students. Having appreciated the service extended by every police officer who is dedicated to ensure peace in the country by performing duties throughout the day, the Minister and the Acting Inspector General of Police create awareness on the upcoming programs to be implemented for the welfare of the officers.

Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Priyantha Weerasooriya participated in the second Conference of ICT Lawyers’ Guild of Sri Lanka held on 02.08.2025 at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo. Headed by the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Mr. Preethi Padman Surasena, along with attorneys-at-law, heads of institutions, national policy makers, technological innovators, and other professionals in the relevant field engaged in a thorough discussion on the legal challenges encountered by Sri Lanka on its journey towards a digital transformation. Views were exchanged on how the Sri Lanka Police is taking action under the existing legal provisions in a manner that is appropriate for the present era, focusing on matters such as, countering domestic and foreign digital threats, cybercrimes, misuse of artificial intelligence, and data security.
