New facilities made available for the Vavuniya Police Division under the leadership of the IGP

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Priyantha Weerasooriya, having paid a visit to the Vavuniya Police Division on 25.04.2025, declared the conference hall, computer training room and the renovated ”Amba Sevana Holiday Resort” built on the premises of the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police Vavuniya open for the use of officers. The conference hall, which was constructed by renovating the barracks that had been there, accommodates a total of 250 people and this conference hall will be of great importance for the Ichchankulam, Puliyankulam and Omantha Police Stations. Furthermore, the new computer lab built on the premises of the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police Vavuniya intends to provide computer training workshops for officers of the Northern Province under the Information Technology Sub-Unit and it accommodates ten officers. The “Amba Sevana Holiday Resort”, which was declared open for police officers visiting the Northern Province, consists of two air-conditioned bedrooms with all the facilities and one non-air-conditioned room, a veranda, and a kitchen. Along with the Acting Inspector General of Police, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Northern Province Mr. Thilak C. Dhanapala, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Vanni Range, Mr. Samantha Wijesekera, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Mannar Division, Mr. L. Y. A. S. A new Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Unit for the Northern Province

A programme of establishing Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Units at the provincial level is being implemented as per the instructions of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, with the aim of providing efficient services to the public by expediting the investigation on computer crimes and crimes committed through social media.  Accordingly, a Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Unit at the Jaffna Police Station was declared open to the public in the Northern Province on 25.04.2025 under the patronage of the Acting Inspector General of Police, and the following functions are expected to be performed through this Northern Provincial Sub-Unit.  Investigations related to sexual harassment on social media. Investigations related to financial frauds done through social media. Investigations related to offences under the Computer Crime Act. Removal of fake Facebook accounts and questionable posts published on social media and recovery of hacked accounts. Providing necessary technical assistance to regional police stations for investigations. Under this programme, Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Units have already been established covering the Southern Province, Central Province, North Western Province, North Central Province and Eastern Province. A 27-year-old individual was arrested for keeping 13 kg and 372 g of heroin and 3 kg and 580 g of ice in a house in the Kotikawatta area.

A 27-year-old individual was arrested for keeping in possession of 13 kg and 372 g of heroin and 3 kg and 580 g of ice in a house in the Kotikawatta area of Wellampitiya on 26.04.2025 by the police officers in Malambe Police Station. The raid was conducted upon a piece of information disclosed and the suspect has been identified as a resident of Korathota in Kaduwela area. Further investigations have been initiated by the Wellampitiya Police Station to disclose information regarding the suspect and the drug trafficking network connected to him.

Police officers instructed to arrest individuals acting suspiciouslywearing motorcycle helmets

In recent times, there have been a number of CCTV footages in circulation of how suspects were coming to commit various crimes, including shootings and murders, reported from various parts of the country, wearing helmets to hide their identities. Wearing a helmet is only necessary when riding a motorcycle and that is to prevent fatal injuries to one’s head during an accident. If a person is wearing a helmet without riding a motorcycle, and behaving suspiciously, the Police Headquarters has instructed all police officers to take immediate action to check the relevant person.

Three individuals and 376 g and 440 mg of ice were arrested through an investigation carried out by uncovering information about a drug (ice) trafficking network

The officers of the Colombo Central Division Criminal Investigation Bureau have arrested an individual in possession of 222g and 330 mg of ice near the B.C.C. Bridge in Maradana on the night of 22.04.2025 and have produced him to the Maradana Police Station. The respective suspect was arrested based on information disclosed by another suspect who was under interrogation and detained at this bureau under a detention order. According to the information uncovered by the respective suspect, two additional individuals were arrested in possession of 109 g and 240 mg of ice as well as 44g and 870 mg of ice, respectively, in the Kotahena Police area and have been brought to the Maradana Police Station. Further investigations have been carried out by the Colombo Central Division Criminal Investigation Bureau regarding these three suspects who are between the ages of 25 and 30.

A young man who made pornographic videos using a 13-year-old child in Sri Lanka has been arrested in the Anamaduwa area, based on a tip-off from NCMEC.

A suspect has been arrested for obtaining pornographic images of boys through social media and producing pornographic images of a local boy. The US government’s National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has provided information to the Sri Lanka Police’s Child and Women Abuse Prevention Bureau in this regard.  Accordingly, on 20.04.2025, a team of officers from the Children and Women’s Bureau conducted investigations and arrested the suspect in the Anamaduwa area.  He is a 34-year-old resident of Anamaduwa, Aandigama, who runs a mobile phone repair shop.   It has been revealed that this suspect has been collecting and viewing pornographic videos and photos of foreign children engaging in sexual activities online since 2022, and has also worked to produce nude videos and related photos of a 13-year-old Sri Lankan child. The Child and Women Abuse Prevention and Investigation Bureau is continuing its investigations into the suspect.

Two youths who were preparing to commit another serious crime have been arrested with bullets and a motorcycle with fake number plates

A team of officers from the Borella Police Station, who were on crime prevention and anti-vice duties, checked two individuals on a motorcycle near the Borella Lake Drive Road on the night of 22.04.2025. One of the individuals was found to be in possession of 55 grams and 300 milligrams of the Ice narcotic, and while checking the luggage, the officers found 06 numbers of 09 mm bullets, two motorcycle helmets with black coloured visors, a forged identity card, and a forged driving licence. When the other individual was checked, there were also 15 grams and 900 milligrams of Ice narcotic in his possession, and upon further investigation, it was revealed that the motorcycle was also bearing fake number plates. According to information revealed during interrogation, since it was revealed that these two suspects, aged 22 and 28, who are residents of the Wellawatte and Borella areas, have planned to commit a serious crime on the instructions of an organised criminal residing abroad, they are to be produced before the Maligakanda Magistrates’ Court, and further investigations are to be done after obtaining detention orders.

Regarding a fake article circulating on social media

A letter prepared in English under the title “CONVICTION”, bearing the name of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, and a forged signature, is currently circulating on social media. It is observed that the facts stated in this article have been presented using incoherent words without any legal basis and have been prepared inserting images, in the background, that resemble the State Emblem of Sri Lanka, the seal of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, and the crest of the Sri Lanka Police. “Cyber Crime Headquarters Colombo, Sri Lanka” has been mentioned as the institution through which this article has been forwarded, and an establishment by this name does not exist in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Police informs the public that the official positions or facts stated in this article have not been published by the Sri Lanka Police and that it presents false and distorted facts. It is also observed that this article has been deliberately and consciously prepared with the intention of discrediting the Sri Lanka Police and misleading the public. Accordingly, the Criminal Investigation Department has initiated investigations to take necessary legal action against those who were involved in spreading false information.
