Polpitiya Police Station Modernized and Opened as a Fully Equipped Facility for Public Service

The newly constructed Polpitiya Police Station, established to serve the residents of Polpitiya village in the Hatton Police Division, was officially declared open to the public on 06.02.2026 under the patronage of the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ananda Wijayapala. The event was graced by the presence of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya. The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Nuwara Eliya District Development Committee, Mr. Manjula Surawirarachchi; Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Nuwara Eliya District, Mr. Priyantha Chandrasiri; Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Hatton Division, Mr. Pradeep Weerasekara; all Officers-in-Charge of the Hatton Police Division; and several government officials. The Officer-in-Charge of Polpitiya Police Station, Inspector Mr. P.H.M.N. Upul Kumara, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests and attendees. Addressing the gathering, the Inspector General of Police expressed his sincere satisfaction at the establishment of a permanent, modern police station equipped with all essential facilities, and at its dedication to the service of the public. The Ministry of Public Security extended its appreciation to all key stakeholders who contributed to the successful construction of the police station, which commenced in November 2025, following the acquisition of 78.43 perches of land belonging to the Ceylon Electricity Board. Previously, Polpitiya Police Station functioned from a small rented house since 2021, providing police services to more than 9,000 residents across seven Grama Niladhari Divisions in the area. With the completion of this purpose-built facility on land allocated exclusively for police use and equipped with modern amenities, the Polpitiya Police Station is now better positioned to deliver a more efficient and effective public service.

A Heartfelt Initiative by the Community Police Division in Commemoration of the 78th Independence Day

In conjunction with the 78th Independence Day celebrations, officers of the Community Police Division visited the Lankarama Viharaya in Borella on the morning of 05.02.2026 to offer comfort and companionship to senior citizens residing in an elderly care home, where they are spending their later years. With the objective of nurturing compassion and respect for the elderly among the younger generation, children from the Tiny Tots Pre-School operated by the Community Police Division were also invited to participate in the event. Arrangements were made to provide the senior citizens with several hours of joyful musical entertainment, featuring performances by the Police Western Band. Well-known entertainers Suneth Chitrananda and Anura Srinath, recognized for their contributions to comedy and music, also took part in the program, further enriching the entertainment. Additionally, the Community Police Division arranged lunch for the residents of the elderly care home on the same day. The program was organized under the guidance of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Community Police and Environment Directorate, Mr. Roshan Rajapaksa, based on a concept introduced by the Inspector General of Police. The event was coordinated by the Director of the Community Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. D.K. Priyantha, and was graced by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Sunil Watagala, who attended upon invitation.

Traffic Plan to Be Implemented in Colombo for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament

The 2026 ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament will be held from 07 February to 08 March 2026. Matches scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka will take place at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Maligawatte, and the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Stadium, Kurunduwatte, with Colombo serving as the central host city. As a large number of local and foreign spectators are expected to attend these matches, the Colombo Traffic Division has formulated a special traffic management plan to be implemented on match days, as outlined below. Traffic Plan for Matches at R. Two Suspects Arrested with Kush and Hashish at Katunayake

The Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau has successfully apprehended two suspects in possession of a significant consignment of Kush and Hashish that had been smuggled into Sri Lanka by air. The narcotics were recovered during a special operation carried out at the arrival terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, yesterday (25) morning. The raid was conducted based on intelligence information received by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau, during which the following quantities of drugs were seized: First suspect: Found in possession of 4 kilograms and 162 grams of Kush and 1 kg and 912 g of Hashish. Second suspect: Found in possession of 6 kg and 230 g of Kush. Total quantity seized: 10 kg and 392 g of Kush and 1 kg and 912 g of Hashish. Police have confirmed that both suspects are 30-year-old residents of the Kottaramulla area. It is suspected that the narcotics had been brought into the country from overseas. The Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau is continuing further investigations into the incident.

8 Kg of Kush Smuggled by Air Seized at Katunayake Airport

The Katunayake Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau successfully apprehended a suspect in possession of a large consignment of Kush narcotics, valued at several crores of rupees, which had been smuggled into the country by air this morning 25.02.2026 Acting on specific intelligence information received by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau, the narcotics were detected during a search operation conducted at the arrival terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake. The suspect had carefully concealed 8 kg and 220 g of Kush within his luggage in an attempt to illegally bring the drugs into Sri Lanka and was subsequently taken into police custody. The arrested individual is a 37-year-old resident of Delgoda. The Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau is continuing further investigations to identify the principal traffickers behind this drug network and any other persons involved.

Suspect Arrested with Illegal Pistol and Live Ammunition

A team of officers from the Special Task Force (STF) Akmeemana Camp arrested a suspect in possession of an illegal firearm and live ammunition during a operation carried out on the evening of 24.01.2026. Acting on reliable intelligence information, STF officers conducted a search at a residence in the Wathugedara area within the Ambalangoda Police Division. During the search, officers recovered a micro-type pistol along with live ammunition that had been carefully concealed inside a room of the house. The arrested suspect is a 33-year-old resident of the Wathugedara area. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect had intended to sell the firearm to another party. The suspect and the recovered items have been handed over to the Ambalangoda Police for further inquiry. Ongoing investigations are being conducted by the Ambalangoda Police.

Three suspects arrested for large-scale drug trafficking

  Police Special Task Force – Akmeemana Camp Officers of the Police Special Task Force (STF) Akmeemana Camp arrested a suspect in possession of 50 grams of crystal methamphetamine (ice) on the night of 23.01.2026 at Vidyachandra Mawatha in the Dikkumbura area of Ahangama. The arrested individual is a 26-year-old resident of the Bandaramulla area in Mirissa. The arrest was made based on a tip-off received from the Army Intelligence Unit. The suspect is currently in the custody of the Ahangama Police for further investigations.  Western Province Southern Crime Division Officers of the Western Province Southern Crime Division arrested a suspect on the evening of 23.01.2026 in the Pussella area of the Thalangama Police Division. The suspect was found in possession of 400 grams of heroin and Rs. 320,000/= (Three Hundred and Twenty Thousand Rupees) in cash, suspected to have been proceeds from drug trafficking. The suspect is a 42-year-old resident of Kaduwela. Further investigations are being carried out by the Western Province Southern Crime Division.  Batticaloa Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau A team of officers from the Batticaloa Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau conducted a raid in the Eravur area on the night of 23.01.2026 and arrested a suspect in possession of 113 grams and 600 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine (ice), along with Rs. 207,200/= (Two Hundred and Seven Thousand Two Hundred Rupees) suspected to have been earned through drug trafficking. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Eravur Police. The arrested individual is a 42-year-old resident of the Eravur 03 area. Further investigations are being conducted by the Eravur Police.
