It has been reported that a sudden fire broke out on the fourth floor of a building on the First Cross Street in Pettah on 20 – 09 – 2025, causing considerable damage on property. Similar incident has been reported on
21 – 09 – 21 that the back warehouse of an establishment at Pamankada Road, Wellawatte was caught fire. Six stalls at the Main Street, Kegalle was damaged due to sudden fire erupt on 23 – 09 – 2025.
The Fire and Rescue Officers together with Sri Lanka Police risk their lives to extinguish disastrous that completely and partially damages nearby stalls and houses. In addition to that, Police officers are urgently called in to manage traffic to prevent inconvenience caused to the Public due to heavy traffic congestion on the nearby road system.
To prevent such situations, if you are running a shop in a congested area, you may;
v Properly maintain gas appliances and electrical systems.
v If high voltage electrical appliances are in use, you may have them checked by a technical officer with the expertise of a technician.
v Check whether the gas and electrical appliances are properly turned off after use.
v Do not allow children to use lighters.
v Conduct awareness programmes on fire prevention, and train the staff to follow proper procedures when store items (petrol, diesel, thinner, paint, gas cylinders, chemicals).
v Prepare and keep emergency exits ready.
v Prepare a way to get water needed to prevent the fire from extinguishing, prepare a fire protection system, and be aware of the appropriate method to extinguish the fire if the materials you own catch fire.
