The Police CCTV Division was officially inaugurated on 29.12.2010.
At its inception, the Division operated with only two camera-equipped vans. These vehicles were deployed for a range of operational duties, including traffic regulation and monitoring, recording traffic-related offences, providing security coverage during events attended by the Honorable President and the Honorable Prime Minister, supervising public demonstrations and unrest, conducting surveillance operations, and gathering data relevant to traffic management.
Over time, officers of the Police CCTV Division encountered numerous operational challenges due to the limited number of vehicles and outdated technological facilities.
Recognizing these constraints, the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya, gave his direct attention to strengthening the Division’s capacity. Acting on his instructions, necessary measures were taken to upgrade two existing vans with advanced, state-of-the-art camera systems. In addition, a previously modernized van, equipped with sophisticated surveillance technology through the financial sponsorship of Prima Institute, was also formally assigned to the Division.
The official handing-over ceremony of the three fully equipped vans was held on 27.02.2026 at Police Headquarters.
The event was conducted under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya. Among those in attendance were the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Police Headquarters, Mr. Nalaka de Silva; the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Close Surveillance Division, Mr. T.P. Gamlath; the Director of the Close Surveillance Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Malan Perera; the Officer-in-Charge of the Close Surveillance Division, Chief Inspector of Police Mr. E.M.N.L.B. Ekanayake; and several other senior officers.
The introduction of these technologically enhanced vehicles is expected to significantly strengthen surveillance operations, improve traffic monitoring efficiency, and further enhance public safety and security across the country.
