On 22.03.2026 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a tricycle being driven in a reckless and hazardous manner along the Chilaw – Kurunegala road collided with an oncoming car in the Thitthakade area.
Subsequent investigations conducted by the Traffic Division of the Chilaw Police revealed that the tricycle had been operated on the road without proper authorization. It was further uncovered that the driver had subjected a cow to severe mistreatment while driving.
Based on these findings, the driver of the tricycle involved in the accident was taken into custody on 24.03.2026.
Further inquiries revealed that the suspect had been driving the tricycle in such a manner with the intention of training the cow for racing purposes. Accordingly, the suspect was produced before the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court on 25.03.2026 under the provisions of the Animal Cruelty Act. The court fixed a future date for the hearing and released the suspect on a surety bail of Rs. 20,000.
The Chilaw Headquarters Police are continuing further investigations to apprehend all individuals connected to the incident.
