Under the intensively implemented “Ratama Ekata” national anti-drug initiative, the Sri Lanka Police has launched a coordinated program, in collaboration with state authorities, to repatriate suspects who are evading arrest overseas while engaging in criminal and drug trafficking activities within the country.
As a further outcome of this operation, a 37-year-old suspect known as “Midigama Chuti,” identified as a key figure in organized crime and drug trafficking in the Southern Province, was escorted back to Sri Lanka from Oman in the early hours of 30.03.2026 by a special team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department.
He is wanted in connection with multiple offences, including murder, robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and several shooting incidents reported in the Matara area.
The suspect is to be produced before the courts for further inquiry and detention in relation to these offences. Investigations are also underway to initiate legal proceedings to confiscate assets believed to have been acquired through illegal means.
These arrests were made possible through a joint operation involving Interpol, the Omani Police, and intelligence agencies. Even in the absence of red notices, necessary diplomatic channels have been effectively utilized to facilitate the return of suspects concealing themselves abroad.
