Suspect arrested for gold theft from bus

A suspect who allegedly stole gold jewellery from three women travelling on a bus from the Anuradhapura Bus Stand to Colombo on the night of 02.04.2026 was apprehended by a team of officers from the Anuradhapura Police Station in the Pandulagama area on the evening of 17.04.2026.

According to the findings of the investigation, the suspect had befriended the three women at the bus stand and offered them refreshments during the journey. After travelling a short distance, the women reportedly lost consciousness, during which the suspect carried out the theft of their gold jewellery.

The investigating officers have also recovered the stolen gold jewellery, valued at Rs. 1,706,400 (one million seven hundred and six thousand four hundred rupees).

The suspect has been identified as a 54-year-old resident of the Saliyawewa area.
