Island-Wide Tree Planting Campaign Launched for World Environment Day; 22,000 Saplings Distributed

To mark National Environment Week, declared in conjunction with World Environment Day, the Sri Lanka Police has initiated and implemented a series of large-scale tree planting campaigns across the island.

A total of 22,000 saplings required for the initiative have been provided through the sponsorship of the Department of Forest Conservation. Under the coordination of the Police Environmental Protection Division, arrangements have been made for all police divisions island-wide to obtain and distribute the saplings for planting.

As part of this nationwide initiative, a special tree planting program was conducted by the Police Environmental Protection Division on the morning of 5 June 2026 at the coastal area within the Wellawatte Police Division.

The inaugural ceremony was held under the patronage of Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Environmental Protection and Community Policing, Mr. Roshan Rajapaksa, with the participation of officials from the Department of Forest Conservation.

A coconut sapling was ceremonially planted to mark the commencement of the program. Under this project, a variety of saplings will subsequently be distributed to police stations throughout the country for planting and environmental conservation purposes.

Director of the Environmental Protection Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Manoj Perera, Officer-in-Charge of the Police Environmental Protection Division, Chief Inspector Mr. Nissanka, and a number of police officers were among those who attended the event.
