An awareness meeting organized by the Nikaweratiya Police Division to educate teachers and school principals on preventing students and society from falling prey to drug abuse, under the national initiative “Iwathwen”, was held on 02.06.2026 at the Simon Nawagaththegama Auditorium of Vijayaba National School, Mahawa. The event was conducted under the patronage of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Western Province), Attorney-at-Law Dr. Ajith Rohana, .
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Pradeep Koholanegedara, Deputy Director of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, who provided a comprehensive briefing to the invited education officials and principals from the Nikaweratiya and Mahawa education zones. He outlined the current drug situation in the country and emphasized the preventive measures required at institutional and community levels.
In addition, Ms. M. Kanchana Subhasinghe, Psychosocial Officer of the Kurunegala District under the National Child Protection Authority, delivered an informative lecture highlighting appropriate interventions and protective measures concerning children.
The event was attended by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Kurunegala District, Mr. Priyantha Chandrasiri; Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Mahawa Division, Mr. S.P.K. Gallage; Officer-in-Charge of the 16 police stations within the Nikaweratiya Division; Provincial Education Director (Development) of the North Western Province, Mrs. A.M.D. Wedanda; Regional Education Director of Nikaweratiya, Mr. Lakshman Hapuarachchi; along with other government officials.
