Water Purification Project Resolves Safe Drinking Water Shortage at Welioya Police Station and Benefits Local Community

The long-standing issue of access to safe drinking water faced by officers attached to the Welioya Police Station in the Mullaitivu Police Division, as well as members of the public visiting the station, was successfully addressed during the official visit of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya, to the Northern Province on 13 June 2026.

A fully equipped water purification plant, constructed within the premises of the Welioya Police Station through the financial sponsorship of Vaultino LLC (Pvt) Ltd and businessman Mr. Eshan Adhikar, and coordinated by the Chairperson of the Police Seva Vanitha Unit, Attorney-at-Law Mrs. Nilmini Neeta Samaratunga, was ceremonially declared open by the Inspector General of Police for the benefit of both police personnel and the general public.

To further extend the benefits of this initiative, arrangements have been made by the Welioya Police Station to channel purified drinking water to a distribution point outside the station premises, enabling residents of the surrounding community to conveniently access safe drinking water.

In conjunction with the event, the Inspector General of Police distributed school bags to 126 students of Welioya Kalyanipura Vidyalaya and presented maternity care packs to expectant mothers. This community welfare programme was organized with the objective of supporting the educational needs of children facing economic hardships while also assisting maternal health and well-being.

The opening ceremony was attended by businessman Mr. Eshan Adhikari; the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Northern Province, Mr. G.M.H. Buddhika Siriwardena; Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr. M.N.S. Mendis; Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. L.A.D. Ratnaweera; Assistant Superintendent of Police II Mr. R.M.A.J. Ariyaratne; Officer-in-Charge of Welioya Police Station, Inspector Mr. D.M.T.S. Wijeratne; as well as the Principal and teaching staff of Kalyanipura Vidyalaya, students, and a large number of local residents.

This initiative reflects the Sri Lanka Police’s continued commitment to community welfare and its efforts to improve the quality of life of both police officers and the communities they serve.
