A team of officers attached to the Police Expressway Division inspected a car travelling towards Colombo from the Aparakka Interchange on the Southern Expressway on the morning of 15 July 2026 and recovered two parcels containing 2 kilograms and 554 grams (2.554 kilograms) of the drug commonly known as Ice.
The two occupants of the vehicle, aged 29 and 32, were arrested in connection with the seizure. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the consignment was allegedly being transported to the Wanathamulla area.
During the arrest, officers also recovered approximately Rs. 97,000 in cash from one of the suspects. The money has been taken into police custody on suspicion that it is connected to drug trafficking.
The arrested suspects, together with the seized narcotics and cash, have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation.
The Police Expressway Division is currently conducting special search operations at all 31 interchanges along the expressway network to detect and intercept the transportation of illegal items. Members of the public are kindly requested to cooperate with police officers during vehicle inspections, as these operations are carried out to ensure public safety and prevent criminal activity.
