Cyber crime and Cyber security Awareness Workshops Conducted for Police Officers

The Police Information Technology Division, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (Sri Lanka CERT), conducted a series of cybersecurity awareness workshops for police officers serving in the Mannar Police Division in the Northern Province, the Anuradhapura and Thambuttegama Police Divisions in the North Central Province, and the Puttalam and Chilaw Police Divisions in the North Western Province on 14, 15, and 16 July 2026.

The workshops were conducted on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, and under the guidance of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Police Research and Information Technology, Ms. Nishani Seneviratne. The programme was coordinated by the Director of the Police Information Technology Division, Senior Superintendent of Police K.G. Laksiri Geethal, with the participation of Officers-in-Charge (OICs) of Police Stations, OICs of Crime Branches, OICs of Children and Women Bureaus, and computer operators attached to the respective police divisions.

The primary objective of the workshop series was to enhance the capacity of Sri Lanka Police personnel to effectively implement the government’s cybersecurity policies, thereby strengthening both national security and institutional resilience against evolving cyber threats.

Over the course of the three-day program, approximately 300 police officers received comprehensive training through a series of informative presentations on emerging cybercrime trends, cybersecurity risks, and practical measures to safeguard themselves and their institutions from cyber threats.

The sessions were delivered by Mr. Nirosh Ananda, Chief Information Officer of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (Sri Lanka CERT); Mr. Thilina Dissanayake, Cybersecurity and Capacity Development Manager of Sri Lanka CERT; and Inspector H.K.E. Harshaka of the Police Information Technology Division.
