Eight suspects, including two women, arrested with 3 kg 790 g of gold and Rs. 16.9 million in cash

Acting on information received on 22.07.2026, officers of the Wattegama Police Station conducted a search at a hotel in the Madawala area, where they apprehended eight suspects, including two women.

During the search, police recovered 3 kg 790 g of gold and Rs. 16,900,000 in cash, the lawful source of which the suspects failed to account for. The recovered items were taken into police custody.

The suspects, aged between 42 and 58 years, are residents of Walapane, Nawalapitiya, Wellawatte, Kotahena, and Modara.

Further investigations led to the seizure of a gold testing stone, one litre of acid, and two grinders believed to have been in the suspects’ possession. These items were also taken into police custody as evidence.

The suspects were produced before the Panwila Magistrate’s Court today and were remanded until 30.07.2026.

The Wattegama Police are continuing investigations to determine the origin and ownership of the seized gold and cash, as well as the circumstances under which they were obtained.
