A training programme on “Prevention of Child Abuse, Exploitation of Women and Children” for police officers

With the objective of “Prevention of Child Abuse, Exploitation of Women and Children”, the National Police Academy, funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), conducted a program for preparing the curriculum for the training course scheduled to be held in relation to sexual and gender-based violence for officers of the Children and Women Bureau of the Sri Lanka Police on 25th, 26th, and 27th April 2025 at the premises of the Jetwing Hotel in Negombo. 

Accordingly, training courses are scheduled to be held for nearly 2250 officers attached to the Police Children and Women Bureaus islandwide, including junior officers and officers of the inspectors’ grade newly attached to this bureau. This training consists of 03 elements as a five-day course, 03-week course, and a diploma.

The objective of this workshop is to identify the basic curriculum for improving the knowledge, skills and expertise of officers in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.

Under this initiative, this training program was conducted with the aim of preventing sexual and gender-based violence in collaboration with government agencies and civil organizations such as the Attorney General’s Department, the Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura and Kelaniya, National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses, National Child Protection Authority, Child Protection Force, Family Health Bureau, Department of Probation, etc.

The official inaugural programme was held on 26.04.2025 and Senior Professor at the University of Kelaniya, Consultant Judicial Medical Officer, Ms. Anuruddhi Edirisinghe, Executive Director of the National Police Academy, DIG Jaliya Senarathne, DIG in charge of Children and Women Abuse Investigation Range, Renuka Jayasundara, Chief Administrative Officer of the National Police Academy SSP Nishantha Chandrasekara, Deputy Director, Police Academic Training ASP Namali Herath, and a number of officers of the Children and Women Bureau participated in this event.
