STF Combat Challenge held to mark the 43rd Special Task Force Day

The STF Combat Challenge sports tournament, organized by the Police Special Task Force under the theme “Niyathai Jaya”, was conducted in line with the 43rd Special Task Force Day celebrations. The tournament was held over several days, with the grand final taking place on 01.03.2026 at the Special Task Force Training School, Katukurunda. Organized to commemorate the 43-year proud journey of the Police Special Task Force, the event featured a variety of vibrant performances by STF officers, including bodybuilding competitions and Taekwondo demonstrations, showcasing their strength, discipline, and professional excellence. Awards and recognitions were presented to officers and teams who displayed outstanding performance and exceptional skills throughout the competition. The ceremony was graced by the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ravi Seneviratne, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, along with several senior officers. Their presence added prestige to the occasion while acknowledging the dedication, courage, and talent of the STF officers who continue to serve the nation with distinction.

Organized Crime Suspect ‘Podi Lasi’ Repatriated to Sri Lanka, Taken into Custody by the Criminal Investigation Department

Arumahandi Janith Madhusankha de Silva, also known as ‘Podi Lasi,’ a fugitive organized crime suspect, was arrested by Indian security forces while in India and was repatriated to Sri Lanka via Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, on the morning of February 27, 2026. The operation was conducted by two officers from the Criminal Investigation Department. The suspect is scheduled to be presented to the Galle District Crime Division for further investigation under the stringent security of the Special Task Force and other law enforcement personnel. This individual is a primary suspect wanted in connection with drug trafficking and violent murders that occurred in the Meetiyagoda and Ambalangoda areas of the Southern Province. The rapid repatriation of the suspect was made possible through a robust mechanism implemented with the direct oversight of the Ministry of Public Security and the Inspector General of Police, along with effective cooperation between the two countries, enabling the return without the issuance of an international red notice. With this arrest, the Sri Lanka Police has successfully repatriated 14 suspects who were hiding overseas. Over the past three years (2024–2026), 29 suspects have been returned to the country through international red notices. Several key suspects currently evading justice abroad are expected to be apprehended in the future using 89 red notices obtained and will be presented before Sri Lankan courts.

Security Measures for Embassies, High Commissions, and Foreign Nationals in Sri Lanka

In view of the prevailing global situation, the Inspector General of Police has issued a series of directives to all police stations island-wide to prevent any incidents that may threaten national security and public order. Accordingly, all police stations have been instructed to implement a special security program to ensure the protection of embassies, high commissions, official residences, and other premises affiliated with such diplomatic missions until further notice. The Inspector General of Police has further directed that comprehensive 24-hour security arrangements be established and executed to safeguard foreign nationals visiting or residing in Sri Lanka, their properties, and their places of accommodation. These security measures will also extend to individuals and assets located at business establishments, tourist attractions and destinations, residential complexes, as well as religious places of worship. Additionally, instructions have been issued to obtain the assistance and coordination of the Tri-Forces whenever necessary for the effective implementation of these security arrangements. Colombo Central Division conducts community awareness drive for Drug Prevention Week

On the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, the Sri Lanka Police has launched an intensified programme of drug raids and public awareness activities in view of Drug Prevention Week, commencing on 01.03.2026, in line with the national campaign “Country Together – Quit.” Accordingly, under the leadership of the Officer-in-Charge of the Colombo Central Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Mahesh Kumarasinghe, together with the Officer-in-Charge of District 1, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Buddhika Gunasekara, and Superintendent of Police Mr. Minura Senarath, police officers distributed awareness leaflets to the public and displayed stickers on three-wheelers around Bastion Mawatha, Fort, Colombo on the morning of 03.03.2026, highlighting the confidential short code 1818. The 1818 hotline is a dedicated and strictly confidential service that enables the public to provide information related to drug-related activities to the police. Recent reports confirm that such small but timely tips have resulted in several successful large-scale drug raids. Let us work together to eradicate drugs from our homeland. “Abhiman Sathsara” – A Moment of Relaxation Amidst Demanding Police Duties

Amid the demanding responsibilities carried out by police officers in the capital city, the Police Media Division organized a musical entertainment programme titled “Abhiman Sathsara” on the evening of 27.02.2026 at the Colombo Crime Records Division Auditorium. The event was conducted with the participation of a large number of officers representing nearby police divisions, providing them with a well-deserved opportunity for relaxation and fellowship. The programme was organized at the invitation of the Director of the Police Media Division and Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr. Fredrick Wootler. The main performance was led by the distinguished music critic and Lyricist Mr. Dhammika Bandara. The evening was further enriched by the harmonious performances of the Police Western Band, whose captivating melodies added vibrancy and elegance to the occasion. The two-hour programme was skillfully compered and musically interpreted by Mr. Dhammika Bandara, who presented a selection of classic film songs, Hindi melodies, and meaningful poetic compositions. Blending humour, emotion, and artistic insight, he created a memorable and engaging musical experience for all in attendance. Among the distinguished guests present were the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Colombo District, Mr. Nishantha Zoysa; the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Crime Records Division, Mr. Jayasiri Kodituwakku; the Director of the Crime Records Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Ruwan Kumara; and several other senior police officers. Also in attendance were senior journalist Mr. Norman Palihawadana and Mr. Kithsiri Hewagama, producer of the stage drama “Neyanage Suduwa,” which had previously been staged by the Police Media Division. The auditorium was filled to capacity with police officers of all ranks, including members of the Police Media Division, reflecting the strong enthusiasm and appreciation for the arts within the Police Service. The program concluded successfully, leaving participants refreshed and inspired amidst their demanding professional commitments.

Three Vans Equipped with Modern Camera Systems for the Police CCTV Division

The Police CCTV Division was officially inaugurated on 29.12.2010. At its inception, the Division operated with only two camera-equipped vans. These vehicles were deployed for a range of operational duties, including traffic regulation and monitoring, recording traffic-related offences, providing security coverage during events attended by the Honorable President and the Honorable Prime Minister, supervising public demonstrations and unrest, conducting surveillance operations, and gathering data relevant to traffic management. Over time, officers of the Police CCTV Division encountered numerous operational challenges due to the limited number of vehicles and outdated technological facilities. Recognizing these constraints, the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya, gave his direct attention to strengthening the Division’s capacity. Acting on his instructions, necessary measures were taken to upgrade two existing vans with advanced, state-of-the-art camera systems. In addition, a previously modernized van, equipped with sophisticated surveillance technology through the financial sponsorship of Prima Institute, was also formally assigned to the Division. The official handing-over ceremony of the three fully equipped vans was held on 27.02.2026 at Police Headquarters. The event was conducted under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya. Among those in attendance were the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Police Headquarters, Mr. Nalaka de Silva; the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Close Surveillance Division, Mr. T.P. Gamlath; the Director of the Close Surveillance Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Malan Perera; the Officer-in-Charge of the Close Surveillance Division, Chief Inspector of Police Mr. E.M.N.L.B. Ekanayake; and several other senior officers. The introduction of these technologically enhanced vehicles is expected to significantly strengthen surveillance operations, improve traffic monitoring efficiency, and further enhance public safety and security across the country.

A memorandum of understanding signed between Sri Lanka Police and Excise Department

The agreement aims to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and enhance coordinated efforts in the investigation and prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing activities. This MoU establishes a framework for information sharing, joint operations, and capacity building, thereby reinforcing the commitment of both institutions to combat financial crimes and safeguard national security.

New Building to Be Constructed for Mirigama Police Station

The foundation stone for the construction of a new building for the Mirigama Police Station was laid on the morning of 25 February 2026. The ceremony was held under the patronage of the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Ananda Wijepala. The existing police station currently operates from an aging and partially deteriorated structure. In response, plans have been finalized to construct a modern facility equipped with adequate space and essential amenities to accommodate all divisions of a fully functional police station. The new building will be erected on the same premises where the current station stands and is expected to be completed promptly at an estimated cost of approximately 80 million rupees. The event was attended by the Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya; Senior Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sajeewa Medawatte; Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Western Province (North) Division, Mr. Kalinga Jayasinghe; Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Western Province (North) Division, Mr. Priyankara de Silva; Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Gampaha Division, Mr. Sanath Amarasinghe; as well as local public representatives, government officials, and members of the All-Faith Clergy.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Mr. Frederick Wootler Receives People’s Award for the Second Time

Mr. Frederick Wootler, Police Media Spokesperson and Assistant Superintendent of Police, has been honoured with a People’s Award for the second consecutive time in recognition of his exemplary service in the Police Media Division. The Pride of the Nation Award 2026 ceremony, which acknowledges individuals currently rendering distinguished service to the country as well as those who made exceptional social contributions during the year 2025, was held on the evening of 22.02.2026 at the Foundation Institute. Previously, Mr. Wootler, who is also a LLB Graduate, received a National Honour Award in appreciation of his outstanding media engagement. His efforts include coordinating with media institutions in Sinhala, Tamil, and English to disseminate accurate information, and directly communicating important updates, guidance, and public advisories through the official social media platforms of the Sri Lanka Police, including its official Facebook page and website. The award was presented by Rector of the Sripalee Campus of the University of Colombo Attorney at Law Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa, . Attendees extended their congratulations to Mr. Wootler, commending his leadership of the Police Media Division and wishing him continued success in his future endeavours. Demonstrating initiative, resilience, and strong language proficiency, Mr. Wootler has served in several capacities, including as Officer-in-Charge at multiple police stations across the country. He is also a Human Rights scholar from the University of Colombo and has served for five years as a Police Advisor with the United Nations in countries such as East Timor and South Sudan, contributing to international peacekeeping and institutional development efforts. Moving beyond traditional media frameworks, ASP Wootler introduced the concept of producing a series of digital audio-visual programmes, including podcasts accessible online at any time and distributed through social media platforms. This forward-thinking initiative has modernised the communication strategy of the Police Media Division and enhanced public engagement. This latest recognition marks the second major award received by ASP Frederick Wutler for his dedicated service to both the public and the Police Media Division. Under his stewardship, the Division is expected to continue playing a proactive and influential role in the media landscape, further strengthening the relationship between the police and the community.

A suspected shooter in the 13.02.2026 Akuregoda shooting incident in which a lawyer was killed has been arrested

The Western Province Southern Crime Division is conducting comprehensive investigations to apprehend all suspects involved in the shooting and killing of a lawyer and his wife while they were travelling in a car in the Akuregoda area, within the jurisdiction of the Thalangama Police Division, on 13.02.2026, by two unidentified gunmen who arrived in a car. Accordingly, a team of officers from the Homagama Divisional Crime Investigation Unit, operating in coordination with the above division, arrested one of the suspected shooters in the Delduwa area, within the jurisdiction of the Ambalangoda Police Division, on the evening of 21.02.2026. A mobile phone believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was also recovered. The arrested suspect is a 46-year-old resident of the Baddegama area. In connection with this incident, three suspects were arrested on 16.02.2026 in the Kottawa Police Division and the Athurugiriya Police Division, and one suspect was arrested on 17.02.2026 in the Kahathuduwa Police Division, on charges of aiding and abetting and criminal conspiracy. In addition, the Police Special Task Force arrested two male and three female suspects on 21.02.2026 on suspicion of facilitating and assisting the commission of this crime in various ways. All arrested suspects, together with witnesses, are currently being detained by the Western Province Southern Crime Division for further investigations. The suspected shooter has been identified as a person who legally left the Sri Lanka Army under the general amnesty granted in 2009 and is scheduled to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court today, 22.02.2026. It is further stated that the suspect depicted in the AI-generated photo image released to the public on 20.02.2026 is not the suspect currently in custody.  Further investigations are continuing to trace and arrest the individual shown in that image, who is believed to be the second shooter involved in this crime.
