16th National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony under the patronage of His Excellency the President

The 16th National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony was held on 19.05.2025 under the patronage of His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the National War Heroes Memorial in Kotte, Sri Jayewardenepura. The heroes who were injured during the war were brought to the ceremony site first, followed by the arrival of His Excellency the President and other guests.  The commemoration ceremony began with a brief moment of silence in memory of the fallen war heroes, and first, His Excellency the President laid a wreath at the War Heroes Memorial. Police officers, who died in terrorist attacks while performing their duties in the North and East, while providing security to the public, and in the South, were remembered with honor and dignity. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Gunathilaka, Commanders of the tri forces who led the war victory, turning that dream into a reality at a time when peace and reconciliation was a dream for every section of the population living in this country for over 30 years, and Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya participated in this occasion.

“Let us embrace the company of good friends” – 2025 Police Bhakthi Geetha”

Sri Lanka Police frequently organize various programmes with the aim of changing the attitude that should be instilled in the minds of the public in accordance with the religious practices in order to build a society free from crimes. One of the main measures taken to peruse such goals is to perform the annual Bhakthi Geetha ceramony at the premises of Police Headquarters and to live broadcast it via social media during the month of Vesak, commemorating the great birth of Lord Buddha. Having passed the message that we should avoid the temptation of corruption through good company to the society, under the theme of ” Let us embrace the company of good friends”, Police Bhakthi Geetha – 2025 was held at the Police Headquarters premises in the evening of 17.05.2025. The Venerable Sangha, and the Hon.e Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the Hon. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ananda Wijeyapala and the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya (Attorney-at-Law) and other senior officers had participated in the event. On the face of the great and excellent contributions of singing, playing and performing of Sri Lanka Police Cultural Division and the Western Band provided, under the direct supervision and guidance of the Acting Inspector General of Police, renowned and popular artists and police officers who have the capability of singing had performed and entertained the gathering with their singing. Many parties, including Police Media Division, Police Information Technology Division, Police Criminal Records Division, and Communications Division have collaborated for the success of the ceremony. The annual ceremony to admire family members of police officers was held this time at the Police Field Force Headquarters

The annual ceremony to present certain grants to the children, disabled children of officers on duty, pregnant officers and pregnant wives of officers was held at the Police Field Force Headquarters on the evening of 09.05.2025 under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Sunil Watagala, and with the participation of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Mr Priyantha Weerasooriya. At this event, steps have been taken to present a laptop computer to Senali Chamathka, who has ranked first on the island in the Arts stream according to this year’s Advanced Level results and who is the beloved daughter of Police Sergeant 34170 Ranasinghe, who is serving attached to the Public Order Management Division. It has been identified that 240 children of police officers are visually and hearing impaired, and they were provided with spectacles and hearing aids. Moreover, it was identified that the number of children of police officers studying in the Western Province is 1087. They were provided with school equipment, and an initiative was started for awarding a monthly allowance of ten thousand rupees for four children whose parents had died while engaging in police service. It was a special occasion that since the first annual memorial of the spiritual father of the Believers Eastern Catholic Church, His Eminence Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan, falls on May 8, 2025, donations were made to 3000 children of police officers, as per the request made to the Inspector General of Police by the current Metropolitan and Archbishop of the Diocese of Colombo. Accordingly, donations were made today for 100 children in the Western Province. In addition, two ICU beds were donated to the Police Hospital. This programme is implemented in all provinces at the police divisional level, and many senior police officers, including Senior Deputy Inspectors General of Police, and children of police officers accompanied by their parents participated in this event, which was held symbolically. 494 kg and 48 g of heroin for which the legal proceedings have concluded, were incinerated

The Sri Lanka Police conducts regular operations under the instructions of the Acting Inspector General of Police in order to eradicate illegal drugs from the country. Police officers, in accordance with their oath, perform their duties with immense dedication and enthusiasm while handling court proceedings and investigations related to arrested drug traffickers. A total of 494 kilograms and 48 grams of seized heroin, for which the legal proceedings have concluded, was taken to the Palaviya area in Puttalam under tight police security and destroyed in the incinerator belonging to INSEE Cement Company on 28.04.2025. This stock of heroin includes 250kg and 996g of heroin apprehended in possession of six foreign individuals during a raid conducted by the officers of Sri Lanka Navy and Police Narcotic Bureau on 15.12.2021 and 243 kg 052g of heroin apprehended in possession of 07 foreign suspects during a raid conducted by the officers of Sri Lanka Navy and Police Narcotic Bureau on 19.04.2022. New facilities made available for the Vavuniya Police Division under the leadership of the IGP

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Priyantha Weerasooriya, having paid a visit to the Vavuniya Police Division on 25.04.2025, declared the conference hall, computer training room and the renovated ”Amba Sevana Holiday Resort” built on the premises of the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police Vavuniya open for the use of officers. The conference hall, which was constructed by renovating the barracks that had been there, accommodates a total of 250 people and this conference hall will be of great importance for the Ichchankulam, Puliyankulam and Omantha Police Stations. Furthermore, the new computer lab built on the premises of the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police Vavuniya intends to provide computer training workshops for officers of the Northern Province under the Information Technology Sub-Unit and it accommodates ten officers. The “Amba Sevana Holiday Resort”, which was declared open for police officers visiting the Northern Province, consists of two air-conditioned bedrooms with all the facilities and one non-air-conditioned room, a veranda, and a kitchen. Along with the Acting Inspector General of Police, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Northern Province Mr. Thilak C. Dhanapala, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Vanni Range, Mr. Samantha Wijesekera, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Mannar Division, Mr. L. Y. A. S. A new Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Unit for the Northern Province

A programme of establishing Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Units at the provincial level is being implemented as per the instructions of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, with the aim of providing efficient services to the public by expediting the investigation on computer crimes and crimes committed through social media.  Accordingly, a Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Unit at the Jaffna Police Station was declared open to the public in the Northern Province on 25.04.2025 under the patronage of the Acting Inspector General of Police, and the following functions are expected to be performed through this Northern Provincial Sub-Unit.  Investigations related to sexual harassment on social media. Investigations related to financial frauds done through social media. Investigations related to offences under the Computer Crime Act. Removal of fake Facebook accounts and questionable posts published on social media and recovery of hacked accounts. Providing necessary technical assistance to regional police stations for investigations. Under this programme, Computer Crime Investigation Sub-Units have already been established covering the Southern Province, Central Province, North Western Province, North Central Province and Eastern Province. Northern Provincial Crime Division established for maintaining law and order in the Northern Province

Concurrent with the reorganization of the administrative structure of the Sri Lanka Police, the “Northern Provincial Crime Division”, established in a building on the premises of the Office of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police – Northern Province in the Kankesanthuraya Police Area was declared opened by the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Priyantha Weerasooriya on the evening of 17.04.2025. Accordingly, Northern Provincial Crime Division was established covering 61 police areas within the the Vavuniya, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Kankesanthuraya divisions of the Northern Province, with the objective of suppressing organized crimes and criminal gangs as well as to curb drug trafficking by bringing about a debilitating effect  on the large-scale network of drug syndicates.  This division consists of a Director, an Officer in Charge, and a special team of officers. Senior DIG in charge of the Northern Province, Tilak C. A. Dhanapala, DIG in charge of the Jaffna Range, Kalinga Jayasinghe, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Kankesanthuraya Division, Ambepitiya, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Jaffna Division, Jayamaha and many other high-ranking officers participated in this event.

New Year greetings before the customary tea table at Police Headquarters

The New Year tea table, traditionally held under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, was arranged at the Police Headquarters on 16-04-2025 under, the patronage of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya (Attorney-at-Law). Senior Police officers and Police Officers discharging duties at the Police Headquarters were present at the Headquarters premises, and all Police Divisions island wide were connected live to the occasion through online. Having extended best wishes and greetings to the gathering, the Acting Inspector General of Police appreciated the service extended by the Police officers who perform duties during the festive season to ensure safety, law and order.  In addition to that, the Acting IGP expressed his special gratitude to the families of such officers for their dedication and their moral support. The Acting Inspector General of Police addressed the gathering and shared the necessary instructions for orderly administration, and the security measures to be implemented, in addition to the steps taken to enhance the welfare of officers. The Acting IGP concluded his address by appreciating the officers who had made a commendable contribution to Police duty. Afterwards, he enjoyed the New Year banquet with the Police Officers.

The Annual New Year Festival was held splendidly at the Police Field Force Headquarters

The main Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival of Sri Lanka Police is celebrated magnificently in the month of Bak (April) of every year under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police. New Year celebration for this year was held since the morning of 19-04-2025 at the ground of Police Field Force Headquarters. Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya conveys his wishes to all Police officers and the public for the Sinhala Hindu New Year. Prizes have been distributed among officers who won in the games, including the foremost event of the festival, marathon. The Deputy Inspector General of Police – Field Force Headquarters, Mr. Jagath Chandrakumara, the Commandant of the Police Field Force Headquarters, Woman Senior Superintendent of Police, Mrs. Darshika Kumari, and a number of senior police officers and junior officers have participated in the event. Police divisions such as Police Field Force Headquarters, Police Sports Division, Police Cultural Division, Police Media Division, Public Order Management Division and Criminal Record Division have extended their support and contribution to make the Annual New Year Festival successful.

Rewards to officers who performed their duties with distinction in the Colombo

The ceremony, which honored police officers who demonstrated exceptional skills in solving crimes while on duty in the Colombo and made commendable contributions to police duties, was presided over by the Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, Mr. Sanjeewa Dharmaratne with the participation of the DIG in charge of the Colombo District, Mr. Ujith Liyanage. The event was held on the morning of 11th April 2025 at the auditorium of the Colombo DIG’s office. An amount of Rs. 19,500,000/= has been allocated from the IGP’s Reward Fund for officers attached to 27 police stations in the Colombo North, Colombo Central and Colombo South divisions, and 74 officers were symbolically presented with prize money on 11.04.2025.  Inspector grade officers, Police Sergeants, Women Police Sergeants, Police Constables, Women Police Constables, Police Sergeant Drivers and Police Constable Drivers were eligible for this reward. Colombo Central Division Senior Superintendent of Police Sugath Galagamage, Colombo North Division Senior Superintendent of Police Buddhika Samarapala, Colombo South Division Senior Superintendent of Police Lucian Suriya Bandara and many other police officers participated in this event.
