Police launch an island-wide search operation on vehicles, including public passenger transport buses, from 23.12.2024 onwards.

“Report information through the emergency hotlines 119 and 1997 in relation to vehicles, including public transport buses, that are driven recklessly and violate traffic rules.” As per the instructions given by the Acting Inspector General of Police, an island-wide search operation on vehicles is to be carried out on 23.12.2024 until the end of the festive period with the aim of breaking the continuity of road accidents which were largely reported during recent days. Accordingly, inspections will be conducted mainly on public passenger transport busses to check whether the drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs and busses will also be scrutinized for reckless driving, speeding, traffic violations, and mechanical defects, including unsafe tires. Legal action will also be taken against such drivers. Simultaneously, inspections will be carried out on other vehicles as well and for that, officers will be deployed island-wide, around the clock.  The primary aim of this special search operation, which has been implemented under the guidance of the Acting Inspector General of Police, is to encourage the public to use public transportation during this festive period while safeguarding drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. The public can report instances of reckless driving and about the drivers who violate traffic rules to the emergency hotlines 119 and 1997 and also to the mobile numbers of the officer in charge of the Police Division to which the respective area belongs or to the mobile numbers of the officers in charge of other traffic divisions mentioned below. Further, videos or photographic evidence of traffic violations can also be submitted via WhatsApp to the designated mobile numbers mentioned above, and legal action will be taken based on such information received.

Shooter, motorcyclist in shooting incident in front of Magistrate’s Court Maligawatta apprehended

The officers of the Colombo Crime Division, who raided the area of Michael Perera Mawatha on the night of 21.12.2024, have arrested the motorcyclist in connection with the shooting incident occurred causing grievous injuries to a woman  in front of the Magistrate’s Court Maligakanda on 14.12.2024. The Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit of the Colombo Crime Division arrested three suspects, including the shooter, and one female suspect on 20.12.2024, and during further investigation, information was revealed about the motorcyclist, who is a 35-year-old resident of Colombo 14. Accordingly, information network was updated regarding the apprehension of this motorcyclist and subsequently, the arrest was made based on a piece of information received that the motorcyclist was wandering about near Michael Perera Mawatha. At the time of arrest, the suspect was also found to be in possession of 16 grams and 550 milligrams of the narcotic, ice, and at the same time, the suspect’s mobile phone was taken into police custody and further investigations are to be conducted. The assassination attempt was carried out on the instructions and direction of an organized criminal who remains abroad.

A twenty four year old youth is arrested by the Police Special Task Force

On 21.12.2024, officers of the Intelligence Division of the Police Special Task Force raided a house on Kudabutgamuwa Road in the Angoda area and arrested a 24-year-old youth who was in possession of 817 grams and 800 milligrams of ice (crystal methamphetamine) and 02 electronic scales that were used to weigh the drugs. Under the operations conducted to fight against drug trafficking, the information has also been uncovered that this youth who distributes drugs is in connection with an organized criminal who runs the drug trafficking network in the country while hiding in Dubai. The officers of the Police Special Task Force have taken action to arrest the said suspect while he was at his residence.

The individual arrested for possession of drugsis a suspect in 4 unsolved crimes

A large number of valuables were stolen from 04 houses of the Mirihana and Kohuwala Police Divisions during the months of February, November, and December of this year. While the relevant police stations and the Criminal Investigation Division were conducting investigations to find the perpetrator, a team of officers from the Divisional Criminal Investigation Division Nugegoda arrested a person who was suspiciously staying near the Mee tree in Pragathipura, Kohuwala on 09.12.2024 along with 2200 milligrams of the narcotic, ice in his possession and he was further interrogated. Then it was revealed that he was the suspect wanted for the above 04 thefts and the suspect has revealed information about a television worth about Rs. 60,000, a Platinum motorcycle, property worth about Rs. 71,000, and property worth about Rs. 46,000. Based on the said piece of information, the investigating officers have found the television and the grinder and have taken them into police custody.  The suspect is a 34-year-old resident of the Kotte area.

Officers of Police Station Borella raid WanathamullaA, 20-year-old youth arrested for possession of 2 Kgs. of the narcotic, ice

A team of officers of the Police Station Borella conducted a raid in the Wanathamulla area today, 11.12.2024, acting on a tip-off, and arrested a 20-year-old youth in possession of 02 kilograms and 100 milligrams of the narcotic, ice. The Police Station Borella is conducting extensive investigations into the suspect, who is a resident of the Mulleriyawa area.

1950 Kg Beef, Five Suspects Arrested

A group of officers of the Agunukolapalassa police station who was on duty at the entrance of the Southern Expressway, Agunukolapalassa, stopped a lorry which was travelling from Agunukolapalassa area towards Colombo early in the morning on 08.12.2024 and inspected it. Even though the lorry is a fully covered lorry with a freezer, the officers have taken steps to open it and carry out a complete inspection and have been able to seize 1950 kg of beef packed inside. The officers also arrested a cab that came as an escort vehicle of the lorry and arrested three suspects aged 21, 19 and 37 who were in the vehicle and brought them to the police station. Based on the information revealed after the arrest, officers including the Officer in charge went to the Debokkawa area of the Weerakatiya Police area to find the slaughterhouse and raided the forested area where the place is located and proceeded to seize another small lorry with a freezer along with two suspects, aged 43 and 45, who were staying in the slaughterhouse, have been arrested.The heads and skins of 12 slaughtered cows were also found in the premises. Further investigations are being carried out by the Police Station-Agunukolapalassa.

A modern firearm without an owner

Based on a piece of information uncovered, the officers of the Police Special Task Force Intelligence Division inspected the premises of the Officer of the Medical Officer of Health in Meethotamulla, Wellampitiya on 08.12.2024.A high-tech pistol manufactured in a foreign country and two magazines used for the said pistol were found hidden under a container placed behind the office, and the weapon was subsequently handed over to the Wellampitiya Police Station for further investigation. The Wellampitiya Police Station is conducting further investigations on the suspicion that this modern firearm may have been hidden without safety with the motive of committing homicide in the near future.

A suspect was arrested for burglary of property worth over Ten Million Rupees

As per the complained received to Police Station, Jaffna, gold jewellery worth Four million and One Hundred Thousand was missing from a house in the Police Area, since 06- 12- 2024. Jaffna Headquarters Police initiated an investigation and a suspect was arrested on the same day. It has been revealed through the further interrogation and information that has already been disclosed that the suspect is the criminal who committed a number of burglaries reported in Jaffna, Kopai and AchchuveliPolice Areas since 2022. Accordingly, it has been identified that a series of robberies i. e. theft of gold jewellery worth more than One Million and Four Hundred Thousand reported to Police Station, Jaffna on 08 – 05 -2023, theft of gold jewellery worth around One Million and Nine Hundred Thousand from a house in Achchuveli in the night of 04 – 11 – 2022, and theft of gold jewellery worth around Twelve Million, and Rupees Thirty One Thousand in cash on 28 – 11 -2024, have been committed by the suspect in the custody. As directed by the suspect, the Police offices accompanied him on 07 – 12 – 2024 to a house of his relative to uncover the stolen jewellery which have been buried by the suspect. Then he attempted to throw a live grenade hidden there towards the Police officers. The Police officers acted immediately and prevented a massive destruction, and then took the suspect back to the police station with the live hand grenade. Having presented the suspect before the court, the Police obtained detention orders to uncover the stolen jewellery as well as to disclose information on the crimes he has committed. Further investigations are conducted in this connection.

A person was arrested with 506 grams of Heroin

During the day patrol conducted by the officers of the Police Station, Ja-Ela, in the area on 07-12-2024 searching information on criminals, received a piece of information was received about a 37-year-old person residing at 05th Lane, Krushwatta, Kotugoda area afternoon, who smuggle drugs. Measure have been taken by the Police Officers to arrest the suspect without any delay, and when the suspect was arrested, 506 grams of heroin was in his possession. The suspect, who is in the custody of the Police Station, Ja-Ela, was produced before the court. Having obtained detention orders, further investigations will be conducted in this connection.
