Our History

Mr. Stanley Senanayake, the then Inspector General of Police was the first President of the Sri Lanka Section, whilst Mr. S. Vamadevan , the then Deputy Inspector General of Police Metropolitan Range was the first National Secretary General.

Mr Vamadevan was the pioneer co-funder responsible in forming of International Police Association Section in Sri Lanka and was personally responsible in securing the membership of the association with the IPA in Graz, Austria in the year 1974.

The first meeting of the Section was held at the Police Library on 16th January 1973, during which meeting the first National Executive Committee was elected. Our Section which was formed on 16.01.1973 was recognized as a self governing National Section on 3rd September 1974 at the International Executive Council meeting held in Graz, Austria in 1974.

For the first time, a friendship week was organized by the Section in the year 2000, followed by 6 other international friendship week events in the years 2003, 2005, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2018.

For the first time a Permanent Executive Board  (PEB) meeting of the IPA was held in 2008 in Sri Lanka which was the first such meeting that was held covering the Asian Region.

The then International President Mr.Michael Odeysseos, who hails from Cyprus, Visited Sri Lanka on three occasions and in particular after the tsunami was hit effecting devastation in the country. Subsequent to an appeal made to the PEB for emergency aid after the Tsunami, Sri Lanka Section received funds from most of the member countries worldwide totaling to Sri Lankan Rupees 9,474,880.41 and these monies were distributed amongst 224 affected Police officers through-out the island PHQ.

Of the monies received directly from IPA German Section, totaling a sum of LKR 3,730,298.75,  part of this contribution was used for the construction of a house for the children of a diseased police Sergeant who lost his life in Galle on the day of  the Tsunami whilst engaged in saving the lives of Civilians.

IPA Sri Lanka is a live and an active organization in the Asian Region and enjoys a good reputation among all Sections in the world. Further, our Section is recognized as one amongst few hospitable Sections, well considered as a friendly and a caring nation
