16th National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony under the patronage of His Excellency the President

The 16th National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony was held on 19.05.2025 under the patronage of His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the National War Heroes Memorial in Kotte, Sri Jayewardenepura. The heroes who were injured during the war were brought to the ceremony site first, followed by the arrival of His Excellency the President and other guests.  The commemoration ceremony began with a brief moment of silence in memory of the fallen war heroes, and first, His Excellency the President laid a wreath at the War Heroes Memorial. Police officers, who died in terrorist attacks while performing their duties in the North and East, while providing security to the public, and in the South, were remembered with honor and dignity. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Gunathilaka, Commanders of the tri forces who led the war victory, turning that dream into a reality at a time when peace and reconciliation was a dream for every section of the population living in this country for over 30 years, and Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya participated in this occasion.

“Let us embrace the company of good friends” – 2025 Police Bhakthi Geetha”

Sri Lanka Police frequently organize various programmes with the aim of changing the attitude that should be instilled in the minds of the public in accordance with the religious practices in order to build a society free from crimes. One of the main measures taken to peruse such goals is to perform the annual Bhakthi Geetha ceramony at the premises of Police Headquarters and to live broadcast it via social media during the month of Vesak, commemorating the great birth of Lord Buddha. Having passed the message that we should avoid the temptation of corruption through good company to the society, under the theme of ” Let us embrace the company of good friends”, Police Bhakthi Geetha – 2025 was held at the Police Headquarters premises in the evening of 17.05.2025. The Venerable Sangha, and the Hon.e Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the Hon. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ananda Wijeyapala and the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya (Attorney-at-Law) and other senior officers had participated in the event. On the face of the great and excellent contributions of singing, playing and performing of Sri Lanka Police Cultural Division and the Western Band provided, under the direct supervision and guidance of the Acting Inspector General of Police, renowned and popular artists and police officers who have the capability of singing had performed and entertained the gathering with their singing. Many parties, including Police Media Division, Police Information Technology Division, Police Criminal Records Division, and Communications Division have collaborated for the success of the ceremony. Police Seek Public Assistance to arrest a suspect

On 28.12.2024, a group of people who arrived in a car in the Liyanagemulla area of Seeduwa opened fire at three residents of the area with a T-56 firearm, having killed two people and hospitalized one with injuries. The Seeduwa Police Station is currently carrying out investigations to apprehend the suspect depicted in the photo below, who is believed to be involved in this crime and has fled the area where he resides. The annual ceremony to admire family members of police officers was held this time at the Police Field Force Headquarters

The annual ceremony to present certain grants to the children, disabled children of officers on duty, pregnant officers and pregnant wives of officers was held at the Police Field Force Headquarters on the evening of 09.05.2025 under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Sunil Watagala, and with the participation of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law, Mr Priyantha Weerasooriya. At this event, steps have been taken to present a laptop computer to Senali Chamathka, who has ranked first on the island in the Arts stream according to this year’s Advanced Level results and who is the beloved daughter of Police Sergeant 34170 Ranasinghe, who is serving attached to the Public Order Management Division. It has been identified that 240 children of police officers are visually and hearing impaired, and they were provided with spectacles and hearing aids. Moreover, it was identified that the number of children of police officers studying in the Western Province is 1087. They were provided with school equipment, and an initiative was started for awarding a monthly allowance of ten thousand rupees for four children whose parents had died while engaging in police service. It was a special occasion that since the first annual memorial of the spiritual father of the Believers Eastern Catholic Church, His Eminence Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I Metropolitan, falls on May 8, 2025, donations were made to 3000 children of police officers, as per the request made to the Inspector General of Police by the current Metropolitan and Archbishop of the Diocese of Colombo. Accordingly, donations were made today for 100 children in the Western Province. In addition, two ICU beds were donated to the Police Hospital. This programme is implemented in all provinces at the police divisional level, and many senior police officers, including Senior Deputy Inspectors General of Police, and children of police officers accompanied by their parents participated in this event, which was held symbolically. Stolen explosives recovered within two days and four suspects arrested

It was reported on 04.05.2025 that a properly licensed gunpowder storehouse owned by a private businessman located in the village named Alahena in the Damana Police Area of Ampara had been broken into and a stock of detonators, detonating cords and water gel had been stolen. Several police teams and intelligence units were deployed to immediately arrest the suspects involved in the incident, and based on information uncovered, the Ampara Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau was able to arrest four suspects on the night of 05.05.2025 and on the dawn of 06.05.2025. Based on information obtained from the suspects, 4100 stolen detonators, a box containing 25 rolls of 10-meter detonating cords and 45 kilograms of water gel (9 packets each containing 40 sticks) have also been taken into police custody. The Ampara Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau is conducting further investigations into the four 24, 32, 39, and 56 year old residents of Hingurana,  Damana, Alahena areas and the quantity of explosives.

A person who provided accommodation to two people who came for the shooting incident at Meetiyagoda on 03.05.2025 has been arrested

A suspect who provided accommodation to two suspects on the previous and following days of 03.05.2025, on which the shooting took place, at Meetiyagoda killing two people, has been taken into custody by the Special Operations Unit Southern Province of the Police Special Task Force on 06.05.2025 at Weragoda, Meetiyagoda and produced to the Meetiyagoda Police Station.  The suspect is a 46-year-old resident of the Weragama area. The Meetiyagoda Police Station is conducting further investigations into the suspect.

Two persons, who aided and abetted the shooting incident reported from the Hirana area on 29.04.2025, arrested

The Organized Crime Prevention Unit of the Police Special Task Force arrested two persons on the night of 05.05.2025 for the possession of 30 grams of the narcotic Ice, and later it has been uncovered that they are two suspects who aided and abetted the shooting reported from the Hirana area in Panadura on 29.04.2025. After finding out through investigations that they are close associates of an organized criminal and a drug trafficker living abroad, it has been further revealed that they had provided a firearm and a van for the purpose of transportation to the suspects who were directly involved in the shooting incident in the Hirana area. The two 21 and 25-year-old suspects, who are residents of Maradana and Colombo 13, have been produced to the Police Station Kompagngna Veediya for further investigations.

A training programme on “Prevention of Child Abuse, Exploitation of Women and Children” for police officers

This training consists of 03 elements as a five-day course, 03-week course, and a diploma. The objective of this workshop is to identify the basic curriculum for improving the knowledge, skills and expertise of officers in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence. Under this initiative, this training program was conducted with the aim of preventing sexual and gender-based violence in collaboration with government agencies and civil organizations such as the Attorney General’s Department, the Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura and Kelaniya, National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses, National Child Protection Authority, Child Protection Force, Family Health Bureau, Department of Probation, etc. The official inaugural programme was held on 26.04.2025 and Senior Professor at the University of Kelaniya, Consultant Judicial Medical Officer, Ms. Anuruddhi Edirisinghe, Executive Director of the National Police Academy, DIG Jaliya Senarathne, DIG in charge of Children and Women Abuse Investigation Range, Renuka Jayasundara, Chief Administrative Officer of the National Police Academy SSP Nishantha Chandrasekara, Deputy Director, Police Academic Training ASP Namali Herath, and a number of officers of the Children and Women Bureau participated in this event. A main suspect who handled many crimes in this country while hiding abroad was repatriated

The main suspect, Lattuwahandi Sujeewa Ruwan Kumara Silva alias Loku Patty, an organized criminal who masterminded the crime of killing two people, including the person named Club Wasantha, and injuring four other people in the Athurugiriya Police Area on 08.07.2024, was brought to this country from the Katunayake Airport on the morning of 04.05.2025.  Since many criminals and suspects involved in organized crime and drug trafficking remain abroad, the International Criminal Police Organization has issued red notices for their arrest at the request and as per the investigations of the Sri Lanka Police. This individual who had been wanted as the main suspect in connection with many grave crimes committed in this country was recently arrested from the Republic of Belarus by the security forces of the said country. It has been revealed that he had handled, aided and abetted the following crimes while hiding abroad – • A case is pending in the High Court Kalutara on the possession and trafficking of 23 grams of heroin in the Welipenna Police Area on 21.05.2016. • A case is pending in the Magistrate’s Court Kesbewa on committing homicide and causing grievous hurt by shooting in the Piliyandala Police Area on 09.05.2017. • A case is pending in the High Court Kalutara on the possession and trafficking of 299 grams of heroin on 15.06.2017. • A case is pending in the Magistrate’s Court Matugama on the possession of a live grenade manufactured in a foreign country and a locally manufactured revolver and ammunition in the Welipenna Police Area on 08.01.2021. Furthermore, the following cases are also pending in Courts against this person named Loku Peti. – • Shooting and causing injuries to a person in the Ahungalla Police Area on 24.08.2022. • Shooting and killing a person in the Ahungalla Police Area on 23.09.2022. • Shooting and killing a person with a T-56 firearm in the Ahungalla Police Area on 12.10.2022. • Shooting and killing two people and causing injuries to four people in the Athurugiriya Police Area on 08.07.2024. Facts regarding this person will be reported to the court and extensive investigations are scheduled to be held having detained the suspect.
