Conducting another successful raid, officers of the Police Special Task Force, Matara Camp, on the evening of 24.09.2025, recovered 04 T-56 firearms, 27 T-56 live ammunition, 01 T-56 magazine, 02 grams and 850 milligrams of heroin and Rs. 830,000 worth of cash suspected to have been earned from heroin trafficking, and arrested the suspect and his 37-year-old wife residing in the house. Based on the information revealed during the interrogation of the 38-year-old suspect, measures have been taken to arrest the 38-year-old female suspect for conspiracy to commit a crime, and further investigations are underway by the Weligama Police Station regarding them and the firearms.

It has been reported that a sudden fire broke out on the fourth floor of a building on the First Cross Street in Pettah on 20 – 09 – 2025, causing considerable damage on property. Similar incident has been reported on  21 – 09 – 21 that the back warehouse of an establishment at Pamankada Road, Wellawatte was caught fire. Six stalls at the Main Street, Kegalle was damaged due to sudden fire erupt on 23 – 09 – 2025.   The Fire and Rescue Officers together with Sri Lanka Police risk their lives to extinguish disastrous that completely and partially damages nearby stalls and houses. In addition to that, Police officers are urgently called in to manage traffic to prevent inconvenience caused to the Public due to heavy traffic congestion on the nearby road system.   To prevent such situations, if you are running a shop in a congested area, you may;   v  Properly maintain gas appliances and electrical systems. v  If high voltage electrical appliances are in use, you may have them checked by a technical officer with the expertise of a technician. v  Check whether the gas and electrical appliances are properly turned off after use. v  Do not allow children to use lighters. v  Conduct awareness programmes on fire prevention, and train the staff to follow proper procedures when store items (petrol, diesel, thinner, paint, gas cylinders, chemicals). v  Prepare and keep emergency exits ready. v Prepare a way to get water needed to prevent the fire from extinguishing, prepare a fire protection system, and be aware of the appropriate method to extinguish the fire if the materials you own catch fire.

Officers at the Weligama Police Station arrested a foreign national who was staying at a shelter in the Welihinda area in the early hours of 21.09.2025 in possession of 409 grams of the narcotic drug Ice and 10 utensils suspected to be chemicals used to manufacture the narcotic drug.  Chemicals and equipment such as colorless liquids, whitish pieces, weighing scales, and thermometers were among the items seized. The suspect, an 18-year-old Moldovan national, was produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court on 21.09.2025 and was detained at the Weligama Police Station and granted permission for further investigation. Further legal action is scheduled to be taken based on the reports from the Government Analyst’s Office.  

In view of the escalating prevalence of Heroin, Methamphetamine (ICE), Cocaine, and Cannabis across several regions of the country, the general public is now afforded the opportunity to directly contact the designated mobile numbers of the Senior Deputy Inspectors General (Senior DIGs) assigned to each province and provide intelligence. Upon receipt of such information, the respective Senior DIGs will initiate immediate measures, including conducting the required raids and enforcement operations, while ensuring the utmost confidentiality and protection of the informants. The Sri Lanka Police wishes to inform the general public that a letter currently circulating on social media, claiming to have been issued under the signature of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), is completely false and fabricated. This fake document falsely alleges that the IGP has instructed the “Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children & Women” to apprehend citizens and non-citizens engaged in activities relating to the viewing, possession, dissemination, distribution, or production of material depicting minors in sexually explicit conduct associated with internet protocol usage. The Sri Lanka Police categorically states that no such letter has ever been issued by the Inspector General of Police or by any authorized division of the Sri Lanka Police. This document is a deliberate act of misinformation and an attempt to mislead the public. The public is strongly advised to exercise caution and refrain from sharing, publishing, or endorsing such false content. Circulating fabricated documents not only misinforms society but may also constitute a punishable offense under the law.The Sri Lanka Police further reiterates its commitment to upholding the law, protecting children and women, and ensuring accurate and verified information is communicated to the public.
