A team of officers from the Elpitiya Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau apprehended a suspect in possession of 120 grams of heroin in the Devagoda area, within the Ambalangoda Police Division, on the morning of 18.04.2026. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Ambalangoda Police Station. The individual has been identified as a 23-year-old resident of the Devagoda area. Further investigations are being carried out by the Ambalangoda Police.

Following extensive efforts to apprehend S.F. Raju, who had been identified as an organized crime suspect linked to multiple murders and serious offenses reported within police jurisdictions around the Elpitiya area, he was recently arrested in India by Indian security authorities. On the night of 17.04.2026, a team of officers from the Sri Lankan Criminal Investigation Department escorted the suspect back to Sri Lanka by air. He is scheduled to be presented before the relevant court, where proceedings concerning these offenses are ongoing, under stringent security measures. According to information uncovered during investigations, the suspect operating under the alias “Raju” was allegedly involved in a series of shootings using T-56 firearms in the Meetiyagoda, Hikkaduwa, and Imaduwa areas. Investigative teams handling the case have reported details concerning his involvement to the courts on multiple occasions.

During the Sinhala and Hindu New Year period, many people rely on the internet to carry out various transactions, including purchasing goods and making payments. However, this time of increased online activity has also led to a rise in cybercrime, with offenders using diverse tactics to illegally obtain money and sensitive personal information. Based on complaints received by police stations and the Criminal Investigation Department in recent years, it has been observed that certain individuals become vulnerable to these scams, often due to financial pressures and the temptation of quick financial benefits. Investigations have revealed that such online fraud is carried out through multiple methods, including deceptive advertisements, malicious links, Avurudu-themed promotions and giveaways, counterfeit trading platforms, fraudulent bank offers, fake bank websites or app updates, QR code scams, phishing emails, SMS-based scams, imitation websites designed to appear legitimate, and caller ID spoofing. Furthermore, scammers may exploit images of prominent figures such as the President, the Prime Minister, and well-known celebrities to create a false sense of trust and credibility. There is also an increased risk of targeted phishing attacks, financial scams, and identity theft through the misuse of personal data obtained via fraudulent means. In light of these risks, the Police urge the public to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and maintain a clear understanding when conducting online transactions, in order to avoid becoming victims of such criminal activities.

Two skilled players from the Sri Lanka Police badminton team have earned the prestigious opportunity to represent the country at the 43rd Asian Badminton Championships 2026. They are Sub-Inspector Madhuka Dulanjana and Manthuka Rupatunga. This marks the third occasion that Sub-Inspector Madhuka Dulanjana will compete in the Asian Badminton Championships as a member of the national badminton squad. Under the intensively implemented “Ratama Ekata” national anti-drug initiative, the Sri Lanka Police has launched a coordinated program, in collaboration with state authorities, to repatriate suspects who are evading arrest overseas while engaging in criminal and drug trafficking activities within the country. As a further outcome of this operation, a 37-year-old suspect known as “Midigama Chuti,” identified as a key figure in organized crime and drug trafficking in the Southern Province, was escorted back to Sri Lanka from Oman in the early hours of 30.03.2026 by a special team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department. He is wanted in connection with multiple offences, including murder, robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and several shooting incidents reported in the Matara area. The suspect is to be produced before the courts for further inquiry and detention in relation to these offences. Investigations are also underway to initiate legal proceedings to confiscate assets believed to have been acquired through illegal means. These arrests were made possible through a joint operation involving Interpol, the Omani Police, and intelligence agencies. Even in the absence of red notices, necessary diplomatic channels have been effectively utilized to facilitate the return of suspects concealing themselves abroad.

On the evening of 25.03.2026, officers attached to the Enderamulla Police inspected a suspicious three-wheeler at Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi Mawatha within the Enderamulla Police Division. During the inspection, the officers recovered 1kg and 30g of “ice” (crystal methamphetamine), 1kg and 30gm of heroin, and a sum of Rs. 130,000 (Rupees One Hundred and Thirty Thousand), suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking. A suspect was taken into custody along with the three-wheeler. The suspect is a 36-year-old resident of Wanawasala. Enderamulla Police are conducting further investigations.

On 22.03.2026 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a tricycle being driven in a reckless and hazardous manner along the Chilaw – Kurunegala road collided with an oncoming car in the Thitthakade area. Subsequent investigations conducted by the Traffic Division of the Chilaw Police revealed that the tricycle had been operated on the road without proper authorization. It was further uncovered that the driver had subjected a cow to severe mistreatment while driving. Based on these findings, the driver of the tricycle involved in the accident was taken into custody on 24.03.2026. Further inquiries revealed that the suspect had been driving the tricycle in such a manner with the intention of training the cow for racing purposes. Accordingly, the suspect was produced before the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court on 25.03.2026 under the provisions of the Animal Cruelty Act. The court fixed a future date for the hearing and released the suspect on a surety bail of Rs. 20,000. The Chilaw Headquarters Police are continuing further investigations to apprehend all individuals connected to the incident.
